Are You A Porcupine Head?

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

I have observed this over time and it remains in effect in some offices with REALTORS with I guess it is just there style of operating. So I'll ask you to check yourself in the mirror today and ask,

Porcupine Head    Are You A Porcupine Head?

What I mean by that is some REALTORS, particularly the Rainmakers, and the heads of teams are unapproachable. It doesn't have to be the heads of teams but can be anywhere from the superstar local agent with the face on the billboard to just an agent who has a very powerful ego and delegates seemingly EVERYTHING to their "associates", their assistants. You can NEVER reach them live on the phone. Yes, they may be busy with business but to me they seem a little too full of themselves and their relative importance in real estate and the world.

To avoid being a porcupine head, BE APPROACHABLE. Sounds simple but it goes right over many of the quills of some. Return all emails and phone calls. Listen without interrupting people. Always pause before responding. Let people know WHEN you can be reached. Do not talk too fast or not respect people by being interrupted by cell phones at a meeting. Smile and look people in the eye.

Advanced APPROACHABILITY 201 means you pick up the phone and contact your sphere and colleagues FIRST without playing this game that you are better than them.

To stop being a porcupine head you need to pull the quills out and turn yourself into a loveable Koala bear. Someone where everyone is attracted to you. Rather than them saying that person is a snob, has an ego the size of Texas, or is on this huge team, you want them to say YOU will take care of them. You can be trusted. You will go the extra mile for them. Afterall, while smart and experienced at your craft, deep down you are this big Teddy Bear. With that in mind, people will be lining up outside your door to cuddle up with you and get that big hug. No prickliness allowed!! Save that for beautiful desert cactus flowers.

Porcupine Head ... now that's a nice way of putting it.  I pride myself on having an office of agents who are approachable and reachable.  Wouldn't have it any other way.

Gary - need to lose the needles and roll out the red carpet.  No place for unapproachable in a people oriented business.  Not enough room for Me attitude but plenty of team room.

Gary - there are some PH out there, and you right, they are unapproachable. It makes no sense to me. Anyhow, quills would hurt!

Hi Gary, I've only met a few porcupine heads, I sure hope I am never one.  PH is a nice name for them Gary, and you are right, if they pulled out their quills, we could give them a hug!

Gary, I love it!  That's a great way to refer to the impossible ones I've come across this week.  Porcupine heads.  Very appropriate.

It is not just Realtors that are unapproachable in the Rain!  Some play a game that they are better than others.  Awesome post Gary!!!

Koala myself.  And would guess that is what you are too, Gary.  Thanks for another thought provoking post.  I don't see the better than others stuff Cathy Lee is talking about, sometimes people are just busy and it's not about us...it's good to be busy but we also understand as when we are busy we tend to disappear for a bit as well.  I think understanding the other person's challenges is just all it takes.

Gary, I have felt those quills before from those pseudo VIPs.  The most successful agent in this area answers her phone and is as nice as can be to everyone.  Just great to work with, very attentive to requests and details - she certainly has earned her success.

Gary,

I like the term "Porcupine Heads!" I can think of several in our Industry that this is a perfect description for them! They are not fun to work with and you know the kind of service you are going to get! Less than none!

Love the analogy.  To me this is what "This is lkdjfoid. I return calls between 10 and 11, or 4 and 5." looks like.  A porky pine head!

Gary, As usual, I am way behind on your posts.  This reminds me of when I was new 24 years ago.  We were in a booming market and everyone was too busy to help out the lowly new person.  A lot of agents became new construction site agents, but they were too busy and important to sit their own jobs and had willing and able free assistants from the new agents.  I'd like to note that two of the major players in my company at that time are out of the business.  One is selling cars and one is a title officer.  The title officer actually told me once, after I asked him a question and he answered me that "this is why I make the big bucks"!  Well, I'm thinking he ate those words a few years later when his new construction leads died, he had lost his resale business and was now orchestrating settlements!

Gary - I have been a Koala Bear agent working with another Koala Bear agent, and just today I was thinking what a smooth and pleasant transaction it has been. We need more Koala Bears in this business!

This is good information. Especially the cell phone suggestions. We tend to forget to live in the moment. We can return the calls but we can't get back the impression we just made by putting that call before them. I often leave the phone in the car so I am not tempted to answer it.

What a great reminder for all of us.  Even though we may not be that porcupine head most of the time, I think it's possible to have one of those very busy days that we do not listen very well.  Very well written post.  Thanks!
