Bald Knob AR mansion

My friend Anita sent me this great picture of a mansion in Bald Knob Arkansas.  Bald Knob gets laughed at a lot because of its name.  It really is NOT a town made up of old men with bald heads but a nice little town that used to be considered the strawberry capital of the world.  Now the strawberries are mostly pick-em-yourself and strawberry stands alongside the highways that peddle fresh picked ones.  The old berry sheds that used to have buyers from around the country stand empty now. Bald Knob is about 10 miles from Searcy Arkansas.

Folks still flock to Bald Knob for the best strawberries in the world and there is a little drive-in restaurant power pole with climberscalled "The Bulldog" that makes absolutely wonderful strawberry shortcake from fresh strawberries.  There's also a restaurant called "Who Dat's" that serves cajun food.  There's usually a line to get in at night.  The little town probably has more good places to eat than any other small town in Arkansas.

Anita also pointed out the old telephone or power poles that are in the old cities.  Note there is one on the side of the picture of the mansion.

Then note this close-up of one that she snapped a picture of.

She thinks, and so do I, that the poles are of interest because of the bars for climbing up the pole.

Says Anita, "Bob thinks it interesting that the prong thingeys don't start down very low - he thinks it's to keep little kids from trying to climb the pole.  AGAIN, in my day, those were the poles and I don't recall any boy climbing up them.  ask Dude."

Dude is my husband and he'd have been willing to climb one if they'd been restricted.  So I like Anita's husband Bob's reasoning.

Anita also says, "I think now they either use a cherry picker on their truck or put spikes on their shoes."   I think she's right.  We never see anything but buckets at the poles anymore.

Did any of you ever climb a power pole?

The mansion, by-the-way, is still maintained meticulously and is a joy to drive by.  Anita took black and white photos but those are azeleas and they'd have been dangerous to our eyes in color!  So whe was being very careful with her camera!

Thanks, Anita.

Barbara, those brackets used to be very common on utility poles----haven't seen them since I was a kid though.  They did start well off the ground to keep people---not just kids---from fooling around on them.  We used to shimmy up to the brackets:)  They would use a ladder to get to the first brackets.  Mostly just cherry pickers and spikes now though.  I am sure Nutsy will come in here and have lots to say about this post:)

Charles, I would have bet you'd be doing that pole climbing.  You may have to explain shimmying.  Nutsy will be sure to brag about needing no brackets!

Charles, that's exactly what I thought you meant!  I became all worn out and skinned up just watching that shimmy video.  Thanks!

I haven't seen those posts with the brackets in at least a quarter century. :)
Beautiful house, by the way.

That's an awesome looking house Barbara and yes, I must admit. I was one of those kids that used to shimmy up trees and poles. Till my mom got a hold of me, then I wished I had been much faster and gotten out of reach.

Sylvie, that's what Anita noticed.  She thought they were a thing of the past.  I'd never noticed them in the first place.

Suesan, funny comment.  Bet your mother knew how to make a believer out of a rowdy child!!  LOL

Nutsy, one of these days you may get your tail burned on a power line.  Or fried.  Oh!  I forgot that you already are the certifried home inspector!

I'm glad so many ActiveRainers seem to have enjoyed this blog.....and esp. the poles.   I didn't deliberately take a black and white photo, though:   I accidently hit the wrong button or whatever on my husband's camera (which I'm not allowed to touch very often)....so the picture came out b&w.  It's nice, though.   I also took his camera with me to photo record my t.v. anchor daughter doing a Koman Race for the Cure in Kansas City, Kansas this past fall.  She had so many different and interesting "stand ups"....and inside the train station which is another trip back into the past.   You guessed it:  black and whites.  Haven't figured out yet what it is I do to that camera.

Anita, I guess confession is good for the soul.  I was not about to say that my blog-fodder supplier was inept when it comes to cameras.  Besides I LOVE black and white pictures as you can tell by how many are on my blog.

Those of you who may have noticed what she said about her daughter....let me tell you about her.  Her daughter is drop-dead gorgeous and was a hugely successful TV news anchor in Arkansas before she got a better offer in Kansas City.  Her name was Karen Fuller and I assume she still uses that name.  How about a picture, Anita?

Barbara, I think we belong to a Mutual Admiration Society.....thank you for the kind words.   I'll dredge up a current picture of Karen but in the meantime anyone who cares can find her at KCTV5, the CBS affiliate in Kansas City.   Maybe some of you ActiveRainers are in the K.C. area.   A lot of folks don't care for their WHAM< BAM, HIT YOU WITH HE NEWS style of reporting but that's what pays her salary so what can I say?

Mrs Barbara,

Do not let Mr Charles fool you. He could shimmy up a tree about half as well as he could do the shimmy-shimmy coco bop, which is not at all.

Hmmmm, I think Anita took that shot over in Pleasantville not Bald Knob. No problem with the camera.

The steps are coming back.

Garden City, N.Y., June. 1, 2007 – Allied Bolt Inc, a New York based manufacturer of Outside Plant Hardware, proudly announces its new line of specialized Pole Steps for use on Fiberglass and Composite Utility Poles. In keeping with long- standing configurations used on wood utility poles, Allied Bolt’s new Pole Steps for Fiberglass and Composite Utility Poles appear very similar in design with some modifications.

Anita, just get us the picture of that beautiful girl!!

Zane, I knew it!  You'd climb that pole if you weren't supposed to!  You were a typical kid!

Nutsy, I think you're right.  If he could have shimmied up that tree, why didn't he send us a picture of HIMSELF doing it instead of that youtube one of someone else.  Can you do the shimmy shimmy coco bop?  Picture please!

Don, I'm glad you're back.  We have had no education while you've been gone gallivanting around the world!!  We need you here!

Nutsy, If you're going to wear that stupid fruit suit, put your head through the middle and let it twirl around your stupid   sweet little neck!
