The Day The World Changed In An Instant

Record PlayerI can remember the day clearly.

The Day The World Changed In An Instant.

One day the mall music store had LP vinyl records in the store which you could take home and play on a record player with speeds of 33, 45, and 78 rpm. The next day they were all gone replaced by Compact Discs. All gone. You had to go out and by a new player and LP's were history. It wasn't that long ago at 1982, but those under 25 years old may not know what a record player even is. Great covers on those albums too from Earth Wind and Fire, Beach Boys, Michael Jackson Thriller, etc.

With change in our Real Estate careers and lives sometimes there are CLEAR demarcations to the next trend.

Whether that be in technology, like hard disk software programs to the Internet, desktop PCs to laptops, shoe size mobile phones to tiny ones you can place in your pocket, to drastic life changes, Pearl Harbor, landing a man on the moon, 9-11, the world can at points change on a dime.

In real estate look at the last few years with the growth of Active Rain, Facebook, Twitter, videos on web sites not just virtual tours, Web 2.0 and its interactiveness with the reader. Change does provide some drastic jumps for us. We just have to roll with these things best we can. Often the jumps really are good once you embrace them and see the benefits. Some who are clinging to cell phones of four years ago haven't accepted the power of a computer and a phone in one device and downloading powerful applications into the palm of your hand. Oftentimes like the new car smell, you have to have a friend show you the impact and power of the quantum leap change. Like moving from black and white TV to color. Like moving to high definition displays with crystal clarity form standard format video.

Change will keep coming in our life ready or not. Yes, that record player you once used to listen over and over to with your favorite album is probably found more often than not at a garage sale these days. Remember those eight track cartridges for your car? Change is good if you just keep an open mind to it. Talk with others why they like something new and eventually you will come on board to a new way of thriving in the world. Afterall if you never overcame laughing at the word "blogging" you would have never made it over to this post. I'm glad you did!! A great sharing vehicle for all of us here.

Hi Gary-YES, change like it or not comes whether we keep up or not. I do remember when I had 8 tracks, 33's 45's and I still have VHS tapes and cassettes and even know about 78's.  I also remember thinking when I first heard about blogging that I would never do that and thought it was a waste of time and thought it was something only kids did. Guess my changing is changed on that. Besides it is because of that blogging that I have found quite a few friends including you and that is fabulous. Have a great day. <SMILE>

Gary, I just got a new cell phone about 2 months ago, and told the guy I didn't need a blackberry. Yeah, I am going back, and missed out on the rebate so now have to pay full boat. I should have been more open to change. Great post.

An excellent post, and I hope everyone reads it.    As Heraclitus pointed out, several hundred years B.C., "change is the only constant".   Not an easy lesson, ever, for any of us.    Maybe that's why so many philosophies emphasize "going with the flow"???

Gary ~ Sometimes I jump all in for change and sometimes it takes me a little while to be "convinced".  We all wind up changing (whether we want to or not - like getting older) all the time. I guess it's a matter of whether or not it just becomes a natural part of your routine/life/day.

Hi Gary, The changes everyday of things that we once thought were maybe possible in the distant future are a good reminder of how fast things change and the effort it takes for all of us to stay up with it. I can't even imagine a brand new blogger today and the learning curve they will experience.

Call me sentimental, but I still have my LPs and a functional record player, but I mostly listen to music files on my computer or on my I pod now. That's progress.

Change -- it can be so overwhelming sometimes. Can we ever keep up? It sure keeps life interesting though, doesn't it?

Gary,

I know for some change is difficult to get a handle on...but when we do we are learning and learning produces changes and for me that is part of what makes like exciting and not static.

Gary - I can remember that too!  Believe it or not, I still have some of my old 45 RPM records.  Some with songs like Fat's Domino's "Blueberry Hill" and Elivis Presley's "Blue Suede Shoes.

I also remember a couple of steps between vinyl and compact disks. . .It was the old 8 track tapes, and tape cassettes.

Yes, change can be good. . .BUT there are still folks out there that insist the old vinyl records have a better sound that the media of today:-)

Hi Gary! So many terrific changes --- better, faster, smaller--- I do miss the Vinyl and the fantastic art work on those album covers -- oh, and print size that you could actually read! LOL!! Thanks Gary for the walk down memory lane.

Gary, There was something to be said for the "Good old days."  !  I had my little record players which grew as I did....and was allowed one 45 a week if I was "good."  I still have a turntable and my albums and 45's, in spite of all my clutter clearing that was never clutter to me!

I can still see all the wonderful album covers of my great collection! I enjoy a lot of the tech changes...that seems to be the easy stuff. It's the political, financial & relationship shifting that keeps me wobbling... you might need to change the needle on your turntable soon! ;-)

Gary - It baffles me why people in real estate cannot embrace change enough to realize that cutting edge technology is what can put them at the top of their game.
