Hurricane Preparedness Week

By

Hurricane Season begins on June 1 and ends on November 30.  The past several years have been pretty quiet in our area and we are hoping for yet another uneventful year.  This week marks National Hurricane Preparedness Week.

The most information we can provide is to be sure that you are prepared in the event of a hurricane. Did you know that Florida Disaster.org offers a FREE emergency family or business plan in the event of a hurricane? It only takes a couple of minutes to fill out. The plan will outline the following information:

Your family meeting location and out of town contact information

List of evacuation routes

A plan for family members with or without a disability

A kid and pet items supply checklist

A supply checklist for food, water, ice and first aid kit items

Your local emergency contact information

Checklist of things to do before and after a disaster

In the event of an upcoming hurricane, follow your outlined plan.

The site will also give you helpful information on how to strenghten your home.

You may also find it helpful to check the City of Melbourne website.   They provide links to local, state and federal agencies.

Florida Today Newspaper has a weather page , where you can check the Florida map to see what the weather forecast is.  It also has a 7 day forecast.

The National Weather Service also has a Melbourne Florida page that will give you their current weather forecast.

If you are still looking for additional storm information check with Brevard County Office of Emergency Management.

Preparing ahead in the event of a hurricane saves lives and property.

Sandy,

Never too early to start planning.  I moved to Dallas from the Gulf Coast area two years ago.  Prior to the move hurricane season was always a big concern.

Sandy, this is great advice. Being prepared may help save a life. I heard the Hurricane Center said we aren't going to get hit with as many hurricanes has last year, but they are still predicting some major ones. Thanks for the tips.

Hi Paul, I agree, so many do get caught unprepared.

Hi Richard, My sister lives up in Ft Walton Beach Florida.  I always watch the storms and so many of them get sucked up into Gulf. But, they have been fortunate and they have had few.

Hi Pat, So true. You really can't prepare too early.

Hi Michael, It's so hard to know what to expect, isn't it?  Because no one really knows for sure what will happen.  We'll hope for the best.

Hi Gary, I think having your ducks in a row is the name of the game.

Hi Lou, Preparation is so important.

Hi Tony, We have been fortunate in recent years.  So we'll hope for the same this year.

Wendy,  Great info - so many people in years passed didn't want to evacuate because they didn't want to leave their pets behind.

Hi Ann, Your comment made me chuckle - just the way you said it.  I suppose that no matter where you travel across the US, you are going to find there are different things that each area must contend with.
