WHETHER STARTED BY LIGHTNING STRIKES or by human negligence, wildfires can be one of the most powerful and destructive forces in nature.
The threat of wildfires, though generally thought to be a problem for rural areas in the western United States, can even spread to suburbs and often affect the central and eastern U.S., as well. The 2007 California wildfires destroyed at least 1,500 homes according to an Associated Press report.
Though we may never be able to eliminate wildfires, we can take a few of the following steps to help lessen the danger and damage to our homes. As a National Preparedness Coalition member, SERVPRO® encourages you to follow these safety tips, courtesy of FEMA. More information can be found online at www.fema.gov.
* If you're in a high-risk area, consider clearing out a 30- foot safety barrier around your home. Keep the vegetation in this area to a minimum.
* Clear vines from the walls of your home.
* Prune branches and tree limbs within 15 feet of the ground and your home.
* Clear all combustibles within 30 feet of your home.
* Remove debris from under decks and inside gutters.
* Install spark arrestors in chimneys and stovepipes.
* Use fire-resistant siding.
* Choose safety glass for windows and sliding glass doors.
