When Floodwaters Rise

IF YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS HAS BEEN DAMAGED by a severe flood, it is natural to want to get back to your property to begin the cleanup process. However, the first rule is safety. The FEMA website warns us to be aware of roads or bridges possibly weakened or damaged by the flood. Flood waters are often considered "black water," meaning they may contain contaminates such as oil, gasoline, raw sewage and more - all of which may be harmful upon contact.

Electric lines are often down following a severe flood, and this can also be a severe hazard.  FEMA cautions us to stay away from any downed power lines and return home only when authorities tell us it is safe.

After receiving the "all clear" from the authorities, however, there are a number of steps you can take to help reduce damage to your property.

According to The Institute for Business & Home Safety's www.DisasterSafety.org website, "Acting quickly can increase the chance of salvaging usable materials, reduce the amount of rust, rot and mold that might develop, and limit the likelihood of structural problems."

Though trained professionals will be needed in most cases to mediate flood damage, there are many steps you can take while waiting for SERVPRO® to arrive.  Once authorities have given the "all clear:"

* Remove as much excess water as possible with wet-dry vacuums, mops, and towels.

* Remove and prop wet upholstery and pillow cushions for drying.

* Remove any valuable paintings and art objects to a safe, dry place.

* Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
