Xeriscape: Best way to deal with the drought in Hudson, Florida Real Estate and other areas

Best advice would of course be to listen to  mother nature.  Do not plant what does not belong where you live.  There are so many varieties of grasses and plants as well as trees, that it should easy enough to develop a unique and enjoyable landscape for you use, but also one that is easy to maintain in your climate/conditions.

Most people I know in my area are frustrated at the brown lawns becuase of the strict water restrictions we have.  Couple the water restrictions with the high temps, and it does not bode well for most landscapes.  Unless you use landscaping suited to such conditions which most people unfortunately do not.

And while the term has been around since atleast 1978, most of the Realtors in my office asked what is Xeriscaped when it was added as an option on our profile sheets for listings.

I would hope most know by now, but for those that do not, xeriscape is about planning a yard, which regardless of the normal conditions, will not require additional watering, or greatly reduces the need for supplemental watering.  This is achieved by not only using plants suited for the area, but also designing the yard to minimize runoff and evaporation of normal precipitation.

Florida-Friendly LandscapingTM Program, a University of Florida Extension program http://fyn.ifas.ufl.edu/index.html has detailed information on not only picking the right plant, but where to place it.  It is a great resource to start with from the Univ of Florida
