Is it bad form to list your awards and accomplishments?

By

RE/max platinum club awardI just read my name in the Phoenix Business Journal's Top 50 Real Estate Agent's List.  (Based on real estate transactions in 2008)  I was #37 to be exact and got a little bit of an ego buzz out of it.  So I was wondering, is it bad form to brag about that?

I don't really think mentioning awards and accomplishments should be a bad thing.  If I was looking for someone to represent me on one of the most important transactions of my life, I think I'd want an award winner.

But I'm still wondering, would it seem uncouth to mention that despite 2008 being one of the worst years for real estate sales in decades, I earned the RE/Max Platinum Award for Sales Excellence in 2008.  No small potatoes, actually the second highest level of recognition awarded by the RE/Max International Organization and presented to only 4% of RE/Max Agents worldwide in 2008.

Would I be completely full of myself if I added that I recently received the Multi-Million Dollar Producer Award from the Southeast Valley Regional Association of Realtors?  Would it matter that this award was only presented to 66 out of over 9000 Realtor Association Members?

All that would probably be a little too "Welcome to the Amy show", huh?  Might as well get up and sing a song about myself.

So, never mind.  Forget I mentioned it.

Thanks for those confirming words and congrats!

A shout out "Kudos!" also to you, Bill, Russell, Wayne, and Jennifer.  Having a great year, especially in a down market really IS something to be proud of.  There are a lot of agents who are making some impressive sales figures by listing REO properties.  I, like you, Jen, haven't listed a single REO.  There are still some regular ol' sales happening if you know how to market and maintain your relationships!  Good job!

Congratulations.  I cannot see why mentioning your awards would be a bad thing.  Using them to promote yourself properly might even encourage clients to work with you (as evidence of your skills in marketing).

Definitely fine to share your accomplishments with others and use them (tastefully & appropriately) in marketing.  One thing to remember is that our customers don't care how much we know until they know how much we care...

Amy, congrats on such high honors. Why not promote those honors in a way that let's the consumer know how importand and beneficial it would be to work with someone who clearly works hard and understands the ins and outs of the current market, you go girl!

Amy,

Congrats on your awards.  Being a former longtime Re/Max agent (still would be if where I am now had a franchise as good as Re/Max Real Estate Group in Colorado Springs...now that's a plug) I miss receiving the awards and the fun at the awards banquets.

I say Toot when you can toot...just remember that those that do not hold many honors may be wiley enough to use your awards against you...I did that in two states for years until of course I was receivng the awards again.

First - Congratulations! Being recognized as a Top Producer is always a great ego buzz. Bill #5 mentioned a press release. Try http://www,prweb.com and get your press release online (There's a nice training video that explains how it works.

Now to take the contrarian point of view. For your current clients, letting them know about your achievements is a great way to stay in front of them. BUT, until someone knows, likes and trust you they are only listening to radio station WIFM (What's In it For Me).

Until you can get them listening to another station (you) it doesn't matter how much self-promotion you do (That's so 80's).

Thanks All!

I'll continue to "toot"!  Subtly of course. Greg, thanks for the press release website.  I'll check it out.

As for letting prospective clients in on an agent's accomplishments...I know most prospects want to know what's in it for them, but don't you think a top sales award is a pretty high indicator of a real estate professional's ability to take care of things, including their clients?  Not always, I know...but, if all agents look pretty much alike online and that's where prospects are shopping, I personally would look closely at the award winning agents.  But, maybe that's just me?

 Amy,

Congratulations!  We work hard for our successes and we should "toot our own horn" so that others know about them (and us).   After all, if we don't, who will.  Our clients hire us and refer us because we are professionals who get results.  And, Results=Success.  So...

I think it's ok if it's done with humor. A press release style is also a good option. I think though that having all those 3 letter designations that the public doesn't know about really doesn't make much difference.

Thanks Nancy & Lyn!  I have often wondered about the designations abreviations after our names.  It can be read both ways....either "this agent is very educated" or "this agent is so busy getting educated when does he/she have time to sell houses?" Or even, I suppose "this agent is sure full of him/herself.  I'll bet that most prospects look at it as the first "very educated" and probably feel this is a good thing.  I do think if an agent has a long list of designations, it's overkill.

I am a GRI and a past CRS and ABR...no one really ever knew or cared that was a client but the other agents that referred...they always look for their equals out there.

Amy,

You worked hard to get those awards.  You should let prospective clients know.  We get few accolades in this business. Enjoy!
