The City of Orillia Ontario, Canada Brought To You By Al and Peggy Cunningham of RE/MAX.

One of the neighbourhoods that is near and dear to our hearts, is the The City of Orillia Ontario, Canada that is located on the shores of two lakes; Lake Simcoe (known as the forgotten Great Lake) and Lake Couchiching which form part of the Trent-Severn Waterway System.  You can cruise the system from Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay.

You may wonder why we call the City of Orillia a neighbourhood.  Well with a population of only 31,000 it is more like a neighbourhood!

The Village of Orillia was founded in 1867 (sharing the same birth year as Canada), it was incorporated as a town in 1875 and then became a City in 1969.

Orillia is known as the "Sunshine City" in the heart of Lake Country.  Orillia has had many firsts in North America; such as the first municipal hydro electric transmission plant in America, it was the very first municipality to introduce "daylight saving time" , had the best-lighted main streets on the continent in the 1930's and Orillia even printed its own money in 1936!

The City of Orillia has created many famous people such as famed singer songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, and Sir Sam Steele of the North West Mounted Police to name just a couple.

The Champlain Monument (a National Historic Site) has been called one of the finest bronze sculptures on the continent and to this day proudly oversees the Port of Orillia at Couchiching Park.

Speaking of the Port of Orillia and Couchiching Park; The City of Orillia bustles with waterfront activities.  They include the in-water boat show, Christmas in June complete with turkey dinner, annual Scottish festival, Power Boat Poker Run, Bass & Perch fishing contests, tours on the Island Princess Ferry and more.

Just a short stroll up Mississauga Road and you find yourself back into the 1800's in the quaint Mariposa shop that offers fresh bakery items including the reknowned Texas sized donuts, gifts, clothing and other unique items.

Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.)  In 1995 the new general Headquarters of the Ontario Provincial Police chose the City of Orillia over the City of Brampton for its new home town employing approximately 800 uniform officers and 268 civilian employees and opened to the public in September of that same year.

This is the first time all the O.P.P. services were altogether under one roof.

Looking for a residential home or a summer get-away?

Four canals in addition to Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching offer waterfront locations in a residential setting giving you many opportunities to find yourself a home with your boat only as far as away as your own backyard!  The City of Orillia is home to four islands, Grape Island, Horseshoe Island, Heron Island and Garnett Island.

To date in 2009, you can still buy a property for just over $100,000; or choose a waterfront property that can start in the $400,000's and go into the millions of dollars.

Many people are moving from the nearby City of Toronto (100 km to the south or a little over an hours drive), still commuting to their jobs, finding new ones here in the city or happily retiring.

What a perfect spot to wake up in and come home to!

I think "Sunshine City" may come from "Sunshine Sketches" by the local author, Stephen Leacock. I haven't been to Orillia in quite a while, but I fondly remember my youth spent at two lots my grandparents had on Lake Simcoe. They bought them in the 40's when waterfront was selling for $5 a foot, so the two 50' lots, totalling 100' of waterfront, cost them $500. Prices may have gone up a bit since then : )

I also remember the Champlain monument, and going into town with my grandfather to the shed where they kept the ice cut from Lake Couchiching under straw all summer long. We would sometimes buy blocks to put into the ice-box, or wait for the ice man to come around.

Great times to grow up.

Bob you can't get an Agent to show you the waterfront for $500 nowadays.  The price for waterfront now is more like $5,000 a foot.

Do you remember the ice truck that delivered the ice, and you could run up and grab pieces of ice?  I don't, I'm not that old.

Hi Al and Peggy - Orillia and surrounding areas are a great place to visit for the weekend, as long as you don't travel on Friday night or Sunday night on Hwy 400 with everyone else heading the same way.  Great post.

Hi Andrea, thank you for visiting because we know this posting exercise is very very time consuming, but we are enjoying it!  Was something we had planned on doing but were procrastinating, nothing like motivation eh?  Good luck with your next one!

Hey Marc, you got that right about the 400! Dangerous highway on Friday and Sunday nights, we try and avoid it! Thanks for your thoughts :)
