Turn on, Tune In, Drop Out Message For Modern Times

Balancing ActDr. Timothy Leary, an icon of 1960's counterculture was famous for suggesting detaching from existing conventions in society mainly through the use of psychedelic drugs. Later in the 1990's he thought the personal computer was for many the new drug of choice for escapism. But is there a

Turn on, Tune In, Drop Out Message For Modern Times?

Many think social networks are the next wave of something to plug into to be "out there" so to speak. The resistance by the more conservative type just like opposing the psychedelic drugs of the 1960's, hold on to the conventional ways of doing things as the comfortable way.

Whatever we do to immerse ourself at greater depth in the next thing that comes along promising more "richness" in life for therapeutic, spiritual, or emotional benefits, we must keep this in mind ~ balance. We can't do it all. If you add one more spinning plate to your hand you may drop the balanced fish bowl in the other. And aren't there limits to how much we can take on and absorb? Do you need all three or four social networks on your plate at the same time? What about focus?

The old phrase of Leary's wasn't as radical as it sounds sans drugs.

Turn on meant be sensitive. Tune in meant interact with people and the world around you. Drop out meant voluntary detachment from commitments that were not aligned with your core values.

Unfortunately the 1960's takeaway from his phrase came out like "get stoned and sit in the corner." This was what drugs would do to you. But the essence of the message for a sane, balanced, and sober person is still a good one today for all our lives. Being a hippie is not all bad. I think they at least got the love part down right.

Everything in balance and throw in some love and you are good to go for the 21st century.

I have a couple that I am on all the time.  One for business and one for friends and family.  I try to make time for both.  I also try to keep business for taking over my life with friends and family.

I can't imagine trying to keep up with all the various sites that are out there. I have enough trouble trying to keep up with my own web site and ActiveRain. I just recently joined Facebook and I have so many spam emails and emails from people who I don't know that I've gotten to the point where I just delete them when they show up. I hope I haven't deleted anyone from ActiveRain who wanted to Facebook with me -- LOL & Ooops if I have.

Gary: I'm with you, too many things being offered and not enough time or energy to add another. You just have to decide what is best for you. Active Rain is our main networking source and sometimes I have to just make time to squeeze it in with other obligations I have each evening.

Hi Gary, I do have a question for you. Have you ever missed a day of blogging. When you actually didn't write a post? Just wondered. Reading this post sort of inspired the question, though I have wondered this for some time.

Oh.... I recall those days well. I can also remember being at college and walking through the park area and observing half the students smoking , snorting, and sniffing mom and dad's money away . Of course those were the ones that took a little longer to graduate. We all learned a lot back then.

Gary,

For me this is like learning the history through the experiences of others. I was not here then, and all my memories are very recent.

Gary...I am not so sure that this social media will last as strong as it is now.  I already have realatives that have started calling again because they miss the voice contact.

William: I am not keeping track when I write a blog in a day or not. It could be zero or three. It is just whenever I find time gaps for it. But I get your drift with the drop out theme. Go into the deep woods for awhile and disconnect. I am weird though that I never run out of ideas. I have a million blog stories in my head to write about.

Hi Gary, I think that our entire life is a big balancing act. We must be very cautious what we add to our already full plates, otherwise we will lose our balance and surely topple over from the stress of it all. Choose carefully.

Gary:  There is a lot of distraction going on the more "advanced" our society gets with technology.  Technology can make your life simpler and easier, if you have boundaries.  That's what I find most folks lack.
