Interstate 17 - Proposed Alternate Routes to Flagstaff

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is conducting preliminary studies to determine how to handle traffic on I-17 between Flagstaff and the Phoenix area. The study attempts to look decades into the future and is seeking answers to these questions:

  1. Do current and forecast conditions suggest the need for alternates
    to I-17?
  2. Are there feasible alternates to I-17 that can address the needs
associated with current and forecast conditions?
  3. What additional planning studies, if any, should be done?

Of interest to me is that the "I-17 Alternatives" prepared by ADOT for the study shows only maps of proposed new highways. Why not a railroad up the existing I-17 corridor? Is it because the Arizona Department of Transportation is really only the Arizona Highway Department? Let's think outside the box!

The railroad (light rail?) could have special cars for bikes, or even for horses.

Ms. Heitland:

I saw your comments about the I-17 Alternatives Study. In January Governor Napolitano issued an executive order to ADOT to study transportation options throughout Arizona. The ADOT Public Transportation Division conducted a series of public meetings around Arizona and is now putting together its report and recommendations. Information on the study prompted by the executive order is available at:

Ann, Thanks for the map and the information. This is of a great deal of interest to me because I live within minutes of I-17 and use it almost daily. Because our home is somewhere between Phoenix and Flagstaff we have the blessing of being able to go either way for our shopping and entertainment needs and desires. Just as when we lived in Las Vegas and avoided the strip on the weekends, we find we avoid I-17 from Friday evening through Sunday evening when possible.

Your idea for a rail system is fantastic! I would love to see that happen. We have friends who live in Tempe and own a second home in Williams. While she usually drives to Williams sometime during the week. He takes a bus on Friday evenings. The rail would be a fantastic solution for them. I also noticed that the map of the alternative routes to Flagstaff from Phoenix all seem to cross I-40 at some distance from Flagstaff. What is up with that?

Now, I'm going to go back and check out the link for filling out the form. Thanks!

A lightrail would be the last thing that would be effective. This is not just about transporting people to jobs. People use their cars. Weekend trips for family's or young adults are the majority of the traffic. I travel from Sedona to Phoenix twice a week. We can honestly say the speed limit is the factor in all accidents that end up clogging our main highway.
