I recently read a post by Lina Robertson on linking from comments, and I wanted to divulge into the topic a little more. I have been researching this topic quite a bit lately, and I think I can add to her conversation.

What is a NoFollow Link?

A nofollow links main purpose is to tell Google not to follow a link.  That means Google does not pass PageRank,  or the anchor text for those links. Which means, Google does not count nofollow links, does not follow them, and no-following a link let's you tell Google that you don't trust a certain site.

Examples:

NoFollow link: <a href="www.activerain.com" rel="nofollow">ActiveRain</a>

DoFollow link: <a href="www.activerain.com"> ActiveRain</a>

The difference is pretty obvious, and it's really easy to add the nofollow attribute to any link you want.

Google's Suggestions For NoFollow Links

Untrusted Content - It's good practice to put the no-follow attribute on links you don't trust. ActiveRain adds the no-follow attribute to your comments section, because you never know who is going to comment on your blog, you can't really trust people you don't know, and that makes comments a good place to use no-follow.

Paid Links - It is widely known that Google frowns upon paid links, such as when a webmaster pays another webmaster for a link to increase their PageRank, this is Black Hat SEO, and could get you banned form search engines. However, links that are purchased for advertising should are ok, but you should add the no-follow attribute so Google doesn't think you are buying links for PageRank.

How do you tell if a link is nofollow?

There are two ways to tell if a link is nofollow that I know of.

#1. If you don't use Firefox you will need to look at the code of a webpage. This is the hard way, and I wouldn't recommend it, but I will still show you how.

Fiirst you need to go to your toolbar on your browser, click "view," scroll down to "page source" or "Source" and look at the coding on the page.

Source

Then you can search for the links anchor text by hitting "Ctrl F" on your keyboard, and search for nofollow or the anchor text of the link.

nofollow screen

If that seems diffucult for you, your right, it is. There is an easier way, and here's how:

#2. First, you have to use Firefox, if you don't use Firefox, you can download it here: Download Firefox

Now that you have firefox, you need to get a plug in that will highlight nofollow links, you can download it here: SearchStatus Downlaod

Now that you have downloaded your plug in, you should see something like this on your browser toolbar. (Sometimes it shows up at the bottom of your browser, or the top.)

Search Status Toolbar

Now just right click the little @ button next to the left arrow, and you should get a drop down menu, click the "Highlight NoFollow Links" and voila! All nofollow links are then highlighted on your web pages.

Highlight NoFollow Links

And this is what a nofollow link looks like:

No Follow Highlighted Link

What's the big deal of all this?

The main benefit of knowing whether links are nofollow or not is for SEO purposes.  If you know anything about SEO, you know that links are the #1 determining factor for search engine rankings. But it does no good to go after links for your search engine rankings, for Google anyways, if they are nofollow.  Nofollow links are still good links to drive traffic to your websites, like if people click on them to go to your site, but from a Google stand point, they aren't going to pass any weight for your search engine rankings.

MUST KNOW!

NoFollow is for Google only, Yahoo! and Bing do not use nofollow linking techniques. This is important to know because even though a link is nofollow, it still may be a good link in Yahoo! or Bing, and I would recommend that you don't only  go after nofollow links for your SEO strategy.

Here's Why NoFollow Links Are Good

If Google notices that you only have dofollow links pointing to your website, it's going to throw up read flags. Google knows that having nofollow and dofollow links is natural, and if all of your links are dofollow, that doesn't look natural to Google. If you don't look natural, your site could get penalized.

Yahoo and Bing do not care about a nofollow link or a dofollow link, they count all links. Because they count all links, the more high quality links you have, even if they are nofollow, the higher you are going to rank in those search engines.

If you have any questions, let me know and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability. It would also be nice to hear some of the experts around Active Rain on their input of the nofollow link.

Thanks Lisa.

Perhaps this wonderful explanation will discourage folks from adding links to themselves in comments.

Of course, it's generally not a problem, but if they are my competitors, my "delete" finger works faster than a speeding bullet.

I agree Lenn, that is the very foundation of using nofollow. It keeps those spammers away, and it's necesary to keep the web clean of people who like to abuse the systems. :)

Hi Jane,

Basically, nofollow means google won't count that link. You are telling google that you don't trust that link, and they shouldn't follow the link when indexing your site.

Hi Lisa ~ Nice useful post. I've been researching this subject myself lately and had downloaded the Firefox add-on to figure out where the no-follow links are. I soon found out links on Facebook and twitter are no follow - that was interesting.

We know back links are the holy grail of good SEO, so if they're no follow, then they're of no use to you, at least from an SEO standpoint. (At least for Google). Interesting to find out Yahoo and Bing don't have the same techniques - I didn't know that.

That's the great thing about AR - people like you willing to share this knowledge to help others.

Good explanation.

But I really doubt that a site that has all "follow" links pointing to it would look unnatural.  "no follow" is the unnatural tag that someone has to go out of their way to implement. How many people with websites ever go out of their way to create a "no follow" link?  I never have.

Great explanation of a no-follow link. I have never thought about linking comments to their websites...but, now I know why I dont need to do it. ;-)

7:47am • #37

Very interesting that people do not understand something so basic.  That is what you have taught me with this post:  Poor guys and gals!

With foundation you have laid, let me take this to the next level: no follow links is also about why everybody, including AR wants to give yo a free blog; because the no-follow links means that the GIVER gets the credit from Google and others, the traffic, the page rank, all generated by the FREE CONTENT that YOU provide - your improving the value of THEIR INTERNET REAL ESTATE

How to turn this upside down:

  1. Creat your own properly optimized Wordpress blog ON YOUR OWN DOMAIN, HOSTING ACCOUNT: SO THAT THE rRSS FEED ORIGINATES WITH YOU
  2. Cintinue to post at AR and other industry specific sites: but do not post entire articles, post teasers or half articles, with a link to visit YOUR BLOG to read the rest
  3. This way you get traffic from the other sites, but you can capture the real benefit of being the original 'source' of unique in al the world information
  4. Make your site into a social media community, with all the features of Facebook: there are many free ways to do this (if you consider a 100 hour learning curve free, and you have a high IQ) and may very innexpensive ways less time-intensive
  5. Add video - video search engines are more and more important, think about it, we all whatch tv, surf the net, but we read less and less: video and interactive media are the future.
  6. This way your marketing budget builds a valuable online asset that has a value of it's own (your domain that is NOT an 'I am a Realtor too site' like most of your competitors LOL)

Oh, BTW, the shameless plug to go with the real and valuable information:  learn how to have this all done for you for as little as $199 per year, and get onvernight ranking on Google with a money-back guarantee of the desired result at http://socialmediasystems.com

Lisa- Going to reblog because I think it is so important for Realtors to understand this principle.  It will help in determining where you spend your time and effort.  I hope all your readers install that Firefox app, it is great.

Comment #27, Rita and Brian Burke - That is an incorrect statement.  Zillow is indeed a DoFollow.  In fact, we are one of the only top trafficked real estate sites that follows Realtor's links out to their websites on things like a Profile pages or a property description.  This is not true of many other popular sites, I'll let Firefox name names... :)  Seriously though, add a lot of links to your Zillow profile market text for the exact benefits Lisa describes here.

Nice work on this article Lisa. What I find amazing is how few Realtors take the time investing in SEO knowledge. It is Realtors like you that "get it" - this can have a huge impact on your business. The difference between having your site on the 1st page is night and day in terms of the calls you will get from consumers.

In regards to some of the comments mentioning that you get "do follow" links pointing back to your profile - While this is true the majority of the posts that the comments are on are "unranked" by Google. If people just commented on posts that had PR this would help ranking to a much greater extent. Obviously commenting is about relationships and not PR. I would not make commenting here at AR a focus of SEO as it is not going to do much for you. Trust me I have made over 17,000 comments - if commenting were that powerful who knows where I would be - LOL.

What agents should be doing is looking for "do follow" blogs where the page, NOT the domain has page rank. Leave a comment a you will see your rankings improve!

Got that app you told us about for Firefox, gotta spend some time figuring it out, but it looks like it provides good info.

Also glad to know that the nofollow rule only applies to google, and not to yaghoo or other search engines. That means that linking someone else's website in your response to them would be helpful, even if only for Yahoo and Bing...

Wow Lisa!  I thought I didn't know much about SEO before, but now I realize I REALLY don't know anything about SEO.  :)  I now find myself checking out links on pages all over the internet to see if they are nofollow or dofollow.  As always, an informative and massively educational post!

3:39pm • #53

Just to add to Bill Gassett's comment about using "do-follow" blogs, I've read and seen evidence lately that Google is downgrading the importance of blog-roll links.  I'm almost to the point of thinking you are better off to post a guest article to someone's blog (if they will allow it) and have your links in the article.  When you have links on your sidebar (blogroll) it repeats the links on each individual page the blog creates.  If you've made 25 blog postings, then there are 25 sets of blogroll links showing to Google.  It used to be an excellent way to link...but I think they've started to discredit them.  Hopefully they still credit the original on the blog's homepage and have just stopped counting the inside pages.  I'm not sure yet...still trying to get a firm handle on it.
