With 318 curves in 11 miles, Tail of the Dragon is one of the premier roads in this country for motorcycles and sports cars. "Slaying the Dragon" is a dream accomplishment for many. Although it's the most famous, it is only one of half a dozen incredible riding experiences in the mountains that run through Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee.
The Tail begins in North Carolina with a view of the Cheoah Dam, where Harrison Ford jumped to escape Tommy Lee Jones in the movie The Fugitive. It was originally a path through the mountains used by the Cherokee Indians and it still provides a taste of unspoiled wilderness scenery.
But that dream ride faces a very real threat according to Save the Dragon. Here's what they have to say.
"there is a new twist to the term "Slaying the Dragon" that is far too literal. There is a move afoot to put an interstate right through it!
The money for a feasibility study has already been approved by Congress to initiate the process of creating an interstate that will go from Savannah, GA to Knoxville, TN. The original route proposed could take it along US129, a section of which is known as "The Dragon."
It is our mission, and we have decided to accept it, to prevent this road from becoming a reality.
