Here's the thing...I am a Realtor. And I LOVE what I do!! And while I don't think I have made the overstepping movement yet, I recently had to catch myself. I was at a yard sale and could not get over the house. Beautiful setting, with a fair amount of land, lots of mature trees....such character to the detail of the exterior of the home. Not only did I want to ask the owners if they were having a yard sale because they were thinking of moving, but I REALLY was dying to see the inside of the home. For those of you saying OMG, she didn't....don't worry. I did not ask to tour the home. But I really, really wanted to!!
Hi Dawn! That is funny - I find myself wanting to do things like this, too. It is natural - I love houses and finding little nests for people to live so why wouldn't I be curious when something moves me? LOL You just have to make sure not to come off as a pushy salesperson when doing it:)
Just wondering why you wouldn't ask if they were moving...is that overstepping?
I would have asked if they were selling and maybe for a tour depending on how the conversation went. Maybe I'm overstepping.
I think asking if they were planning on moving would have been fine and conversational enough. Asking to walk through their home....that's where I think I would have been overstepping! LOL
I am like you! I love looking at great homes that have that special something. However, I do not think...if done correctly...that asking if they are moving or inquiring about the house is out of line. I think overstepping is when Realtors are to pushy..just do it gently!
Hmmm...some interesting feedback here....now I'm wishing I would have asked to see the home!! Maybe they will do another sale before the holidays... Or I could send a note card to the home along with my business card and just let them know their home piqued my curiosity...
Not overstepping at all. It was perfectly logical to think the homeowners may be preparing for a move. You were just doing what any good agent would - searching for new business through the normal course of the day.
