Acorn Redistribution

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Destiny Real Estate Cambridge, MA

acorns There's a bumper crop of acorns around here this fall.  Really it's a banner year for acorns - the ground is thick with them.  A veritable carpet of acorns covers the ground anywhere close to an oak tree.

Turns out the squirrels can't keep up.  I'm sure they're taking their share but vast quantities are being left behind.

There aren't any oak trees in my yard or the neighboring yards so my squirrels don't have access to the bounty.

I've decided to become an acorn redistributor.  When I come across "excess acorns" I collect them.  Come winter I'll put them out for the squirrels in my yard.

I can hear my father now, "Don't get too close to those squirrels".  Translation: You're a nut and you'll look mighty tasty to a hungry squirrel.

Elizabeth - I would not have thought of doing that.  You made me laugh with your comment from your dad.  Did he think the squirrels would bite you?

Hi Hannah ~ They are *really* cute I think - I would have one as a pet in a minute if they didn't have those pointy feet with sharp little nails.

Hi Gail ~ No - he says that if he thinks someone is acting "like a nut" i.e. squirrel food - "stay away from the squirrels" is shorthand for that is the craziest thing I ever heard / you're a nut.

Say it's not so Jeff!.  I hadn't heard it but as soon as I read your comment I figured it had something to do with winter.  I did find at least one article that said it's not true so I'm sticking with that one.  But, just in case, if the winter is bad, I'll have plenty of food for those starving squirrels.

In my next life, I want a lot of oak trees on my property so that I, too, can have acorns and squirrels. All I have right now are hummingbirds, pocket gophers, and a lizard that lives on the front window ledge, coming out from behind the pots only if the sun is shining.

Zoey the Cool Cat now knows that if the sun is shining, it's time for her to get up on the desk and watch for the lizard, at which point her tail goes crazy. No working on that desk.

Reminds me of the saying, "even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then".  Your redistribution is going to make a lot of them happy.

Hi Lottie ~ Never been afraid to be a nut!

Hi Marian ~ I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there's no correlation.

Hi Judy ~ Too funny! The next tree I'm planting will be an oak.

Hi Russel ~ Lizard hunting sounds like an excellent hobby for a cat.

Hi Jane ~ Never heard that - good one!

A few years ago I listed a house that had the biggest acorns I'd ever seen.  I collected a bunch of them and got one of those big 3 wick candles and hot glued the acorns in rows all along the outside.  It was a beautiful center piece I gave to my mom for Thanksgiving.  A couple days after thanksgiving mom noticed worms on her table in her dining room.  They had hatched inside the acorns and bore holes and crawled out.  Now I don't store acorns inside the house.

Hi Leesa  ~ You know what?  I was out taking pictures today and it turns out in the "expensive" neighborhoods near my office all the houses have landscape crews - vacuuming up the acorns! Talk about redistribution! I was bummed.

Hi Karen ~ I do make points with the squirrels come winter.

Hi Tammy ~ Unreal!  Funny you should write this - my mother warned me about worms too.  I decided I would keep the acorns in a bucket on the porch. Thanks for the warning!

Hi Michael ~ Who could resist doing a good deed for a squirrel?  I love them!

LOL - this is a cute blog.  :)  I remember one winter we ended up with a huge bag of bird seed and for fun, I opened it up and left it on the picnic table.  No joke, there were easily more squirrels on that table than I had ever seen in my life at one time - must have been almost 40.  It was a LOT of fun!

Hi Karen ~ That sounds great - what a sight! I'm having a lot of fun with my acorn redistribution.  Took a trip out to the town I lived in when I was little the other day and gathered acorns from some of my favorite places including the sidewalk by our old house. And today I pulled over when I saw a motherlode on the side of the road. There will be some happy squirrels in a few months.

Funny - I sold a house this year and the yard was *carpeted* with seed hulls. We figured they were big birders. Turns out it was the squirrels they were feeding. I felt bad since I don't think the buyer intended to carry on the tradition.
