So -- Just How Smart Is Your Pet?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Venture Realty International

Pets can be amazing.  They are often much smarter than we expect.  My cat Yazmine, in my opinion, is extremely intelligent.  And the other day, she really outsmarted me.

Yaz loves to sit in my chair.  If I am there, I let her sit on my lap, but I can tell that she would love to curl up in the chair alone sometimes.  She also likes to curl up in a cupboard about six feet from the chair.  Although she can open the door to the cupboard, she prefers to bang it a couple of times so that I will open it for her.

This particular time she looked at my chair and I knew that she wanted to curl up in it. Then she walked over to the cupboard and tied to open it -- half-heartedly -- she knew that I would help.  So I got up, walked over and opened the door.  But -- no cat.  I turned around and she had raced to my chair and was all curled up in it.  She looked at me and I knew that she was thinking,  "I just outsmarted You!"

It is scary how smart they can be.  I have two Shih Tzus and one is a pedigree male and the other a female with no papers and she is sooooo much smarter!  And very independent.  Your cat is beautiful as well as smart.

Sandra,  I like it when pets are independent, that is one of the reasons that I have usually had cats for pets.  And thank you for saying Yaz is beautiful  -- I know I have always felt that way.

John, Sure --  I bet your dog would if ever the opportunity arose.  Dogs can be awfully smart, too.

That is great, Gary.  I just imagine Yaz sitting there are laughing.  You are lucky she isn't a Cheshire Cat. :)

She is one smart cookie. My last dog let me know if I was not giving her enough attention by eating books on my nightstand. I always had 5-6 books there and she one always select the one I was reading and eat the second half of the book. Random coincedence,  I think not this happened more than a dozen times! LOL

;)

Jane,  It is fun.  But I do prefer her with a grin and not just a grin after she fades away.  I have read that animals don't have facial expressions, but after all the time I have spent with various animals, I really do believe that you can pick out different expressions.

Betina,  I agree that it probably was not coincidence.  Yaz loves to lie on top of my paperwork when I am working.  I thought that if I would set several other stacks around and work off the one kind of to the side that she would pick the one in front of me.  Never -  she always picks the one that I need to curl up on.  They are amazing.

This creature jacoby never stops begging for action. Every morning while I am having coffee he brings a toy to my feet. A fishing poll with just a elastic string attached. :)

Yazmine loves the CEO chair.

Ah, yes, the mischievousness of our fine, furry, four-legged friends. They never cease to amaze us. Zoey the Cool Cat likes to curl up in the office chair, too, but especially after she sees me leave and knows that it's all nice and warm. Even if I'm gone for just a few seconds, she seems to know, and she's there. I've learned to just push her back on the chair and sit in front of her, which I think she likes even more than lying in the chair all by herself.

Happy Thanksgiving from our house to yours!

John,  Sometimes the lazy ones are the smartest -- you'll just have to watch out.

Haris,  Cute photo.  What is his name?  Yaz likes that toy idea.

Russel,  I knew Zoey was smart, so I expected something like that.  Thanks for sharing.

Judi,  Thanks for stopping back.  I hope your Thanksgiving was good, too.  Mine has been.  Yaz also loved the turkey.

Rosalinda,  I'm finding out just how many dogs and cats love our chairs.  It really is interesting.  Thanks for stopping by.

Pat, I agree.  Yaz never misses any meals - but she is not the least bit fat.  Sometimes I wonder how she can eat so much without gaining weight -- I guess if I knew, I could make a lot of money.  And I think she is usually happy and I am happy to have her with me.

Hey, Gary - I came back to check up on Yaz. Is Yaz a siamese? They are supposed to be one of the smartest breeds according to "Cats 101" on Animal Planet this past weekend.

Russel,  Thanks for checking on Yaz.  I know she appreciates it.  I'd ask her but she is having a nap right now and might get upset if I disturb her. LOL  Anyway, I think she is Siamese, but don't know for certain.  My ex-wife and daughter found her in a tree with her eyes still closed.  She had to be fed with an eye dropper.  Her coloring, temperament, voice, etc. are true Siamese characteristics.  In fact she seems more Siamese than some that I know are purebred.  I do know she is smart -- of course, I believe all cats are smart.  "Cats 101" sounds like it was an interesting program.  I'm sorry that I missed it.  Have a great week.

Hi Lana,  I'd love to see photos of Fluffy and "White Boy" if you get a chance.  Have you included Fluffy in any of your posts?  Yaz is jealous of Fluffy - I'm in Wyoming and it is about -5F and Yaz has spent most of her life in Las Vegas.  I know she would rather be in Florida.

Hi, Gary. I'm just trolling through some of the groups I belong to and decided to comment on this post...a bit belatedly.

I have three Siamese and it's like living with monkeys! Not only are they SMART, they are clever, devious, manipulative and have a great sense of entitlement. They always get what they want; I don't stand a chance!

I can certainly relate to your story and it doesn't surprise me one little bit. It's a challenge to have a relationship with a feline who is your intellectual equal, don'tcha' think?!

Leslie, Wow, with three Siamese you definitely don't stand a chance. I don't and I only have one. I'm glad that you stopped by and it is good to hear about your cats. I also like the photo with the horse. I grew up on a ranch and my best friend was my horse, an Arabian stalion that I named Ablis Malik. And he was very smart, too.
