I understand that yesterday's tip was not for everyone, as potted trees do have their challenges.  So, another option for a real tree that has a less negative impact on the environment:

Tip #9:  Find an organic Christmas tree

Organic Christmas Tree

GreenPromise.com can help, or check with some of the growers at your local farmer's market to see if they know anyone growing Christmas trees organically.  In fact, the local farmers may be able to direct you to an organic AND local tree (hey, two tips in one).

But why would you want an organic tree when the guy on the corner lot is so much more convenient?  Because the conventionally grown Christmas tree treated with a multitude of chemicals.  Most notably, the same chemical that is known as the weed killer "Roundup".  The good new is that most of the chemicals are washed away with the rain and snow prior to the tree entering your home.  But trace amount are still present.  But with 35 million Christmas trees being sold each year, that's a lot of pesticide being washed away into the environment.

Going green does mean thinking about all those not so little details.  It does make a difference.
