Dryer Duct Dangers

By
Home Inspector with Habitation Investigation LLC

In this image is a duct for a clothes dryer. As you can see it is in desperate need of being cleaned.
Having too much lint build up is not only slows the flow of air, increases the drying time and increases the costs of drying your clothers. A build up of lint such as this is also a fire hazard. This is just one of the things I come across while doing home inspections.

My question would be . . . how an you tell if your dryer has that much lint accumulated.  I don't keep a comparison of utility costs to even note the difference in an increased bill.

Carla, I've heard that you should clean it every 6 months or so, and that you can tell it's clogged if a normal load of laundry takes more than 30 minutes to dry. You can buy a do-it-yourself cleaning kit [brush and vacuum attachment] for around $30, or pay to have it done in some areas.

An easy way to tell is to go outside your house to where the dryer duct terminates and lift up the louvers and take a look.   By doing it this way you do not need to take anything off.
