Realtors, Should we let sleeping dogs lie?

These are my poodles, Hope on the right and Henri on the left. They were peacefully sleeping when their devious owner(me) decided that it would be a cute picture, and I am sure you agree, all you dog lovers. But just as soon as the flash went off, the pups got up and walked off. I guess I did not learn the lessen of let sleeping dogs lie.

Where did the phrase come from? It is said to have origniated by Chaucer around 1380. He meant the phrase to express that we should stir up a difficult situation when it is best left alone. As realtors, how often do we violate this rule? More than we should. The situation we always understand the best is our own, and the more difficult thing to do is to open yourself up, let go of the ego, and realize that sometimes we think it is our way or the highway. Let me do a few 2010 resolutions I want for myself, and see if this works for you.

I don't have to like the Realtor to do business with them. I know Realtors that will never win personality contest, and they constantly phone you about every little thing. Are the sometimes irratating? Yes, but you know what they get the job done. I would rather have one of these types than the ones that are clueless or do not handle the details.

Being right does not always win in court. Remember that it is what you think is right. A judge or your Commisssion or Board may decide that the buyer or seller or other Realtor may be right in their eyes. Being right can sometimes be like seeing a car coming through the interesection at high speeds running a red light. Doesn't mean that you should go through on green thinking, but I am right. Crash!

That Realtor made me mad a few years ago, and I don't want to work with them. I just got a contract from a realtor I had a dust up with a few years ago. Both of us got eyeball to eyeball. Today you would have never known that. We acted in the best interest of our clients. Let go of a grudge. Also realize that if you still have that feeling of anger years later, then your emotion is in control of you, and probably it doesn't have anything to do with what happened. Can you say passive-agressive? I knew you could. FYI, I miss Mr. Rogers.

Please also let go of thinking that someone shouldn't be dealt with because of your differences. Doesn't matter whether you are right or left, Christian or Buddhist, book smart or street smart. Find what you have in common, work for your client and the transaction, and keep your opinions firmly in check.

Somehow in life we want to make things more complicated than they should be. Think of all the time wasted unnecessarily where you could spend that time doing good deeds. I am not trying to say tolerate people who break the law or the rules because you shouldn't. Just let the sleeping dogs lie. Besides they were so cute I was sorry that I disturbed them. I go the picture though. Best wishes for 2010.

Hi everybody and the pups said thank you for the complements. They are poodles who think they are special, but all dogs are equal in their eyes.

Joe,

That's a very timely comment. I myself have a problem dealing with a couple of realtors in my area. Good advice.
