Fridays Musings.......

As the first full week of the new year draws to a close, how many of our resolutions or goals have also been closed out?  If most of you are like me if you haven't given them up yet they're dangling by a thread.  What makes us give these things up so quickly.  I know that some of you are able to keep them for the entire year.  Some of you are even better than that, and you are able to turn them into habits that you keep for the rest of your life.

I will admit that I don't have a great track record of turning resolutions into habits, it has happened, just not all that often.  I know that many of my resolutions in my past had no chance of working, there was just too little committment to them.  What do we need to do in order to keep our resolutions and goals and turn them into (hopefully) productive traits or habits?  I came across a quote by Thomas Edison that explains the process better than I can.

"The first requisite for success is the ability to apply your physical and mental energies to one problem incessantly without growing weary."

That really is all that there is to it.  Grab hold of them and work at them with all of our physical and mental energies.  This comes from a  man that had several thousand failures before he developed a light bulb that worked.  Anyway this is just some thoughts that I hope will help you and me to make and keep our goals and resolutions.

Tony and Darcy, maybe we just make them too quickly ... much easier to make 'em than keep 'em.  So this year I didn't make any :-)  Actually, since I quit smoking six months ago, all if have to do is stay quit, and that will be a good year.

Sometimes resolutions don't have to be revolutions ...they can be bite size chunks or baby steps in getting to your goal....the important thing is to have a map...a plan...stay on it....revise it when you need to.....and visualize the satisfaction of achievement.

Tony & Darcy, the resolutions I make that I share with my wife, and are relevant to our life, she doesn't allow me to ignore. Those that relate to business can't be forgotten because it impacts our earnings not to mention who we are. Interesting post, thanks for sharing

Hi Tony and Darcy, I haven't made any new year resolutions in years because they don't seem to last. Instead I went to a list of things that are important in life as a reminder to act accordingly.  All the best to you in 2010!

Hi Tony and Darcy, Great post. I think we all view New Year as some magical line that is going to make us different and the truth is: it's just another day in the life of......
I stopped making Resolutions years ago since it just caused lots of guilt feelings when I couldn't or wouldn't keep them. Having goals and a plan at all times works much better like Sally & David said.

Hi Tony and Darcy-

We really need to be careful about the resolutions that we make and not be so discouraged when a little life gets in the way.  Dust yourself off and keep going!  Allof your friends are behind you!

Michael: That's good, Right?

Sallie: Good point, and keep it up!  I have heard that is one of the most difficult things to give up, so 6 months is great!

Sally & David:  Great point!  I think too often we bite off much more than we're really willing to chew!

Rob: Thank you for stopping by and reading!  Have a great day and weekend!

Silvia: That too is a great suggestion!  It is one that I may have to adopt!

Toni: Also great points, too often we put too much emphasis on New Year's Day, I think anytime we find things the we would like to change, we should begin immediately not wait for the "magical" day.  I also think that it is important to remember that change isn't easy, that is why we resist it so much.  I also think that having a plan greatly improves our odds of success.

Sara: Good point, like I mentioned earlier, I think that one key to remember is that change of any kind is difficult, and we should never get down on ourselves if we slip up or if we decide that the change isn't something that we really desire.

Tony and Darcy,

There is a trick to keeping resolutions...  Make one and keep it.  I have mine as making someone smile and laugh everyday....

Did you smile?

I have never been a resolution maker and I'm not going to start now.  I prefer to do all those "resolution" type things on an ongoing basis.  Sometimes I'm eating healthy and sometimes I'm not, but stating it in a resolution won't make it happen for me.  I believe in living each day doing the best I can at that moment.

Sharon: That is a good idea also!  I believe that you should do the best that you can each day, if you do that, what else is there?

Last year I started the year out with affirmations not resolutions.  I said them to myself all year long and it was amazing how many I accomplished. I'm even starting to like exercising (that one is huge for me.) Long story short I intend to keep up my affirmations this year also.
