The Wind Chill is 15 Below! Let's Go Fishing!

Last weekend, I drove out to Tarryall Reservoir. While I have spent much time in the Tarryall Valley, I had never gone as far as the reservoir. So, since the weather folks said the day would be fair, (they lied), I went. On the way, I hit a snow storm, and almost turned back, but luckily it was short lived. The cold, however was NOT. By the time I got to the reservoir, it was a balmy 23 degrees, and the wind was blowing like it was it's last chance.

Now, help me out here. This is something I just don't get. When the weather is so bitter, and you want to eat fish, why not just go to the grocery store and buy it?

With the news full of stories of record low temperatures, 30 to 40 degrees lower than normal over 35% of the country, and death after death is being attributed to the cold, why hang out on a frozen body of water with a hole in it, fishing pole and beer in hand? (OK, maybe it was hot chocolate....) Is it just a 'man' thing, or what?  LOL

I was only able to be outside of the car for 4 or 5 minutes at a time to take these photographs.

Ice Fishing on Tarryall Reservoir

The wind was blowing snow like crazy, creating drifts across the reservoir.

Large chunks of ice had formed and stood alongside the edges of the reservoir.

And it looked like more snow was on it's way from the northwest.

 Fishing? No. Not for me:)

Hi Debi:

I love to fish...but not in that weather!

I have a hard enough time just going to the grocery store or fish market in this weather...

Debi, nice photos!  I went ice fishing once, that was enough!  The thermometer froze at 15 below zero, before the wind chill was factored into the equation, then the ice would make popping noises as you walked across it.  I kept expecting the ice to break.  I don't like fishing that much to put up with that!

I'm with you Debi - makes no sense to me either. Although it always looks pretty interesting in the movies and your photos are great. Sounds like something only a bunch of men would do to get out of the house :)

I prefer to see sights like this through photos like yours, not be there in person!  It's the fish market for me, thank you!

i Deb, A very nice story contained herein. 4 or 5 minutes at a time? WOW, that is cold. I am afraid that in that amount of time I would still be fumbling trying to get the lens cap off. The photos speak for themselves. Beautiful and if  had the opportunity, I think these photos were certainly worth the effort. The last photo would also make a great personal Christmas card.

I never did ask you this. Do you take your photos in RAW format? Do you also have a quick way (software) to add your name on them?

Hi John - Like I told my Mom, in San Diego - I don't want to hear about YOUR cold! LOL (Brave or nuts, could go either way!)

Hi William, Yes, funny you should ask that question now! It is after 1 AM, and I just finished writing a post about shooting in RAW. I plan to post it soon, have one before that to post tomorrow. Look for it in the next day or two - I have a little tweaking to do.

And I create a brush in Photoshop for my signature  - I posted a tutorial on that awhile back. Here it is:

Debi, your photos are how I like to experience winter!  During my time in northern Wisconsin, I did ski, curl and go sleding and tobogganing, but I never understood the ice fishermen.

Well, Debi - I have to agree, Ice fishing is seldom understood by most, I was going to do a post on it myself, but I see you beat me to it :-)  Usually the fisherman can catch a lot of fish --the fish are hingry, and it's fun....so they say :-)

I missed this earlier, congratulations on being a featured member in the Newsletter!

Who is the one who has the problem? The people fishing in -15 degree weather or the person taking the pictures of the people fishing in -15 degree weather. (LOL)
