Weekly Inspiration - The Golden Rule

We’ve all heard the ‘golden rule’ to do unto others as we do unto ourselves, and unfortunately we often do just that! So many of us these days are struggling and not taking the time to really take care of ourselves or treat ourselves the way we should be treated, with loving care.

I think most of us strive to be loving and caring to those around us, but why is it that so often we don’t take the time to do it for ourselves. And when we’re not taking the time to care and nurture ourselves, how can we expect to be able to have anything left over to give to others?

Why is it that so many of us [especially moms] seem to find it difficult to find the time or justify taking time for ourselves. Yet it’s probably the most important thing we can do.

I was recently listening to a self defense tape geared toward women and the presenter asked the audience to what extent they would go to protect their child if they were getting attacked. In absolutely no time at all, the women responded that they were willing to kill the guy if need be. No question. She then asked them to what extent they would go if the same attacker were attacking them personally, would they be willing to kill the guy. There was a much different response. There was hesitation. So we’re willing to do what it takes for someone else, but hesitate when it comes to ourselves. Yet the only way we can help others, is if we help ourselves first.

When you take a flight somewhere and the flight attendant starts giving you the run down on what to do in an emergency, have you ever noticed that they tell you to put the oxygen mask on your children that are traveling with you first. Or help your neighbor who’s panicking. Of Course Not! They tell you to put the mask on yourself FIRST.

The same is true in life.

Do unto others as we do unto ourselves.

When we love ourselves, we love others.

When we forgive ourselves, we forgive others.

Often our actions toward others is nothing more than a reflection of what’s inside of us. The people who lose their temper for no apparent reason in the store aren’t truly responding to the incident at hand. They’re giving a glimpse of what’s going on inside of them.

I truly believe the statement above which says that we can’t really love and forgive others until we learn to love and forgive ourselves.

I hope today, you take a bit of time to remind yourself just how truly special and valuable you are and take a bit of ‘Kathie time’ and be happy you did!

It is the first time I have heard of taking the Golden Rule and applying it to ourselves.  It is a great idea!

OK, Kathie, I'm going to go workout!  I'm guilty of putting myself on the lower priority.  Yours is a good reminder that we're no good to anyone if we're too rundown to do anything.  Thanks.
