Carlsbad Power Plant #2 Along the Ocean - A Reality or A Big Mistake?

By
Real Estate Agent with eXp Realty of California, Inc. CA DRE #01490977

The plans to build a second Carlsbad power plant have been in the works for some time. The proposed site is adjacent to the existing power plant by the Aqua Hedionda Lagoon sandwiched between the 5 freeway and the ocean.

Beautiful site. Ugly buildings. Here is the current plant.

The Encinas Power Plant in Carlsbad California

Not surprisingly there is lots of opposition, by residents and by the City of Carlsbad. The California Energy Commission is in the process of holding hearings to listen to testimony about this proposed plant. Residents are STRONGLY encouraged to make their concerns known so that the state does not make a decision without weighing in on all the concerns.

The City of Carlsbad is concerned about:

  • Location
  • Safety
  • Air Pollution
  • Visual Blight
  • Power is NOT Guaranteed for Carlsbad

I'd say those are some pretty serious concerns. A decision made to build in this area could impact property values further, as well as affect our economy. And I have seen artist renderings of the buildings and towers for the proposed plant. The current plant does not even compare to the size of the new facility with two tall towers and two buildings IMO.

Since water cooling is no longer necessary for today's power plants, it is a no brainer to build the plant elsewhere to not further disturb this valuable land along Carlsbad's coastline. And the current plant will be torn down at some point as it becomes obsolete. The City has proposed the industrial area north of Palomar Airport Road and east of El Camino Real as the best site to situate the proposed plant.

Here's what YOU can do:

  • Attend the hearings on Monday February 1 and 2, 2010 at 6 PM. Hearings will be at the Hilton garden Inn at 6450 Carlsbad Blvd. (the Coast Road).
  • Email the California Energy Commission at PAO@energy.state.ca.us
  • Call 1-800-822-6228 to voice your concerns about this proposed plant.

Unless you are in favor of the new power plant in this location, PLEASE do not miss out on the chance to make your concerns known.

Your area must be growing. I hope they find a better design then the usual big concrete box.

Lloyd - well I wish. The plans I have seen show rather large ugly buildings.

Jeff, I understand the concerns, but I will play the devils advocate.  What will happen to property values if there isn't enough power to satisfy the ever increasing demands, to maintain the life style that we have all grown accustomed to?

George - the issue is not to build or not, it's where to build it. But that is a good question.

Jeff, I saw this too... it doesn't even make sense to build the plant right along the beach!  That is prime real estate and its highest and best use is for local recreation and tourist enjoyment and open space... anything BUT a cement plant!
