The skinniest house in New York City!

By
Real Estate Agent with Nick Sadek Sothebys International Realty DRE# 01118449

Built in 1873, the building is squeezed between 75 and 77 Bedford Street.  The space between the buildings was used as a carriage passage.  The address is 75 1/2  Bedford St.  It has been home to a few famous people including, Cary Grant, John Barrymore, Margaret Mead, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Clark Gable.

Want to live in the skinniest house in New York City?  The rent on this 990 square foot townhouse will cost you $10,000 per month.  Yes!  That's right!  $10,000!

The skinniest house in New York City was purchased in 1994 for $270,000 and $200,000 was invested in fixing it up.  In 2000, it was sold for 1.6 million.  It was on the market for $2.75 million but recently sold for $2.1 million.

Looks like the bad economy hasn't had an effect on the value of this baby.

I'm afriad my claustrophobia would prevent me from living there.  I would love to see the inside though. The inside is 8 1/2 wide by 42 feet long.

It is said to have an airy feel about it with the french doors on the first floor.  A trap door in the kitchen that leads to a finished basement and a nice garden (that is shared) in the back.

I've been inside some skinny buildings in Amsterdam.  Tall narrow stairs and small rooms.  For some, this may be ideal.  It would be fun to see how much IKEA I could add to make stuff fit.

If you are interested in more skinny homes, here is a site I found that has the 12 narrowist homes in the world

That's really odd and interesting, especially the recent sale prices!  I once lived in a skinny house, but not quite this skinny.  I didn't like it either.

I may have a couch that is longer than 8.5 feet. I do not think I could live there!

Hi Chrystina - That sure is one skinny house!  I don't think I could live there.  Also, it seems like it would be all stairs without much floor space!

I bet when it was originally built they never dreamed it would one day sell for millions. Nice local content, Chrystina!

Georgina: The sales price really jumped.  Kind of surprising with the way the real estate market has been.  I wonder if the interest is due to the past residents.  I wouldn't want to live there.

Barb: Flickr.com  is always the first place I look for photos.  Then I make sure they allow us to use them for our blogs.  I was so excited to find this one.  There were sites that had photos of the inside too but they were copyrighted.

Melissa:  8 1/2 feet is very narrow.  My couch wouldn't fit either.  LOL!

Sonja: Skinny home with a big fat price tag.  Ugh!  Can you imagine actually living there?  I think the novelty would wear off for me very quick.

Ellen: I would love to take a tour of the inside.  Just to get the feel of it.

Susan:  Yes, those stairs would certainly take up a great deal of valuable floor space.

John:  I bet that would be more money than they could have ever dreamed of in several lifetimes back when the house was built.  They could have bought a country with that money back then.

Dee:  Amen!  If I'm going to spend that much, I want more for my money too.

Thank you all for stopping by and for your comments.  I really appreciate it.
