OJAI CALIFORNIA
Located north of Ventura, and east of Santa Barbara, Ojai is only a short distance up Highway 33, but feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of Southern California. Ojai is the smallest city in Ventura County, with a population of about 7800 persons as of the 2000 census. The climate is Mediterranean- hot dry summers, with relatively mild winters. Temperatures in the winter can dip below freezing at night. Not bad for New England and other parts of the country, but chilly for us here in So Cal!
Ojai is a charming community. It has long been known as a haven for artists, musicians and health enthusiasts. There is so much natural beauty that it was photographed to represent Shangri-La in the 1939 movie, The Lost Horizon.
Filled with delightful shops, art galleries and a host of places to retreat from the fast-paced lifestyle that can knot the nerves, Ojai invites you to walk its oak-shaded paths taking some time to drink in the serenity of it all.
There are bike trails, horse trails, and hiking in the Los Padres National Forest, with spectacular views. Matilija Creek is a popular spot to enjoy splashing under waterfalls, backpacking, and soaking in a hot spring. To the west, the Lake Casitas Recreation Area offers camping, picnicking, and hiking as well.
Ojai’s reputation as a golfing paradise brings many to the city. The Ojai Valley Inn and Spa is listed as one of the top 25 golf resorts in North America. The course is as challenging as it is lovely. The Inn was rennovated a few years ago to emerge more beautiful than ever including an already famous spa that is available to work out any kinks picked up in life or on the award-winning golf course. Soule Park, a beautiful public course that delivers great value for the money along with spectacular views, is just past downtown on Ojai Avenue.
