Snow in Maryland, Again

The weather forecasters are frequently wrong, but somehow or another they had to be right on the BIG ONE.  Two to three feet, no exaggeration, of snow fell in The Mid-Atlantic region in a thirty hour period from Friday to Saturday.

And now, when we are just barely shoveled out from this storm, another little storm of about one foot is scheduled for Wednesday.  Additionally, there may be another winter blast on the weekend, but who listens to long term predictions.

Your back, your legs, your arms, and your every inch of your body may be aching from the snow digging workout, but there are some important things to consider, which may mean a bit more moving of that snow.

  • Keep an eye on your roof.  If icicles are forming try to knock them off.  The snow and ice could lift your shingles and ruin your gutters, which would lead to water damage in the house.
  • If your drains are blocked open a path.  The melting snow needs to flow away from the house.
  • If your heat pump is covered, clear the snow, or it may burn up.
  • If you are near a sewer, try to clear the area around it so that water can flow and not form puddles which will only freeze creating treacherous roads and walkways.
  • Even if you have one exit from your house clear, make sure that you can get out at any of the doorways.
  • Clear the snow from your bushes and trees to prevent branch breakage.

This may be the highest total seasonal snow fall on record that the region has seen.

Ron,

It was tough to get to my trees and bushes last year to clear them.
