Freedom of Speech ?

Tonight while watching the local news, there was a story dealing with Freedom of Speech as a police offer pulled over a driver for an offensive bumper sticker.

There is a Tennessee Law 55-8-187 stating that you can actually be issued a citation. It was stated that often this is not enforced as it is such a grey area. This statue deals with obscene bumper stickers and window decals.

When doing a Google Seach, there are some interesting article dealing with Tennessee Law 55-8-187

There are some pretty bad bumper stickers and window decals on the road today.

What are your thoughts ?

Well I think that all of our freedoms are important to defend. However our freedom of expression should not interfere with someone elses freedom.  We certainly wouldn't allow offensive billboards so I would imagine this would be the same type of thing.

Kim - So true.... There are some out there that really should not be allowed. Children should not be exposed to some of these stickers we see on vehicles today

We must remember that it is the local community that is to determin what is offensive.

Folks who display obscene bumper stickers are trying to make a statement. That statement is often not too flattering...

Helping you to help others live their American dream...

Roland...

There are subjective issues such as community standards, but I would prefer to allow the speech than to let someone else decide what is or is not obscene for me.

Tim - In the case above, others would not have reacted the same.

Michael - I agree... Some are funny.. some are out right rude

Richard - I can agree to a point, but maybe there should be a line for obscene words...

--- This can go either way. Always good to hear other view points ---

Roland  The mood seems to be how vituperative can I make a bumper sticker.  The sense of decorum has slipped badly
