OCEANSIDE

     Location:  Oceanside schools are located from 5 to 20+ minutes' drive of one of the Camp Pendleton gates.

     Quality:  Reflecting the vast variety of neighborhood ages and qualities, the local schools in Oceanside cover quite a range from low test scores to better to pretty great.

TEMECULA

     Location: Temecula schools near Camp Pendleton are typically approximately 20 minutes from the Camp Pendleton Weapons Gate in Fallbrook.  From the Weapons gate, military personnel's duty station is from 15 minutes to Mainside, to 30 minutes to the Front Gate off I-5 (the Commissary area).

     Being a newer bedroom community or suburb starting in the early 1990's time frame, although there are older homes from the era when Temecula was ranch and farm country, Temecula has a more consistent "master-planned" quality across the tract home neighborhoods here.  I believe that consistency carries over as well to the Temecula schools, which rank typically 8 - 10 for elementary schools, 7 - 9 for middle schools and 7 - 9 for high schools.

    At the high school level, Temecula schools offer many Advanced Placement (AP) programs and extra-curricular activities.

MURRIETA

    Location: Murrieta is the next town north of Temecula, Murrieta's schools near Camp Pendleton are approximately 25 minutes from the Camp Pendleton Weapons Gate.  From the Weapons gate, military personnel's duty station is from 15 minutes to Mainside, to 30 minutes to the Front Gate off I-5 (the Commissary area). 

     Like Temecula, Murrieta's shift to bedroom community or suburb was relatively recent (also 1990's) and also makes for more consistency across schools in the Murrieta Valley school district.  Schools seem to perform a shade below or at the score levels of those in Temecula. 

     At the high school level, Murrieta schools offer many Advanced Placement (AP) programs and extra-curricular activities.  For example, the mock trial team at Murrieta Valley High School is quite strong, making the "Elite 8" the last two years in a row; it is coached by my husband, Frank, who practiced law in the Marine Corps for 14 years.
