Hello Darkness My Old Friend

DarknessIn the 1960's Simon and Garfunkel I think were way ahead of their time. Their classic song, Sound Of Silence, opened up with the line of

  Hello Darkness My Old Friend.

We should all have a friend in darkness. Not the spiritual opposite of Light in our lives but the quiet that is getting harder and harder to connect to in our heavily multi-tasking lives. Do you know while multi-tasking and sensory overload is GREAT in many respects from productivity and getting things done it can be disastrous in one on one relationships, your peace of mind, and the restfulness of your body and soul? FINDING quiet is increasingly difficult in today's modern society, turning handheld devices, TVs, computers off.

I think why many of our hard working families crave the beach or mountain or vacation to Yellowstone is to break the rhythm up in our lives, to disconnect for awhile to search out some peace and quiet. It is hard to listen when we are saying we are hearing when there is background noise as distraction. As good as we might think we may have progressed as good listeners, without immersing yourself in TRUE quiet from time to time, your brain and soul will never get a rest that it so sorely needs.

Some might say with modern living, with a house full of teenage kids, with clients barking at us from three kinds of devices, with social media popping up at every turn, a Pandora's box has been opened up and we can't ever again go back to quiet. I disagree. One time I was driving between very tiny towns in west Texas which is lightly populated between Ft. Stockton and Alpine. They even have an astronomical telescope out there it is so far out in the middle of nowhere. I actually stopped the car, hadn't seen any other car in 30 minutes, got out, and LISTENED to the sound of silence. I take myself back to that place often as a reminder that quiet really does exist in the world. It was like a spiritual experience for me that the world was truly all to myself.

Seek out quiet somewhere in your life from time to time even with just another person letting them do all the talking. It is amazing what that darkness, that quiet will do to rejuvenate your soul. Make darkness your friend.

Great thought. I was speaking with someone today about how technology may make it more convenient to do business everythwere, but it can also rob us of our privacy. Sometimes you gotta be in that cave awhile...

Hey Gary - sorry its been so long since I paid a visit!  Somewhere where there are no cell phones, phones, computers....just some good books - warm breezes and the sound of crashing waves!

Gary, when the lights go out in my room, there's still the LED blips of the wireless router, the clock face and my cell phone's blinking  vying for attention.  I decided to just throw some stuff on top of them to regain the darkness I crave when going to sleep.

It is funny, my quiet time is usually in the morning on a walk...  I get completely centered to start the day...  But I never do anything in the evening to slow down, that is other than hanging with my hubby...

Was it really that long ago ... Simon & Garfunkle in black and white? Loved his guitar work. I hadn't realized what an excellent musician he is in addition to being a poet. Thanks for the 'silent' message.

Gary, I find this in my reading although it doesn't quiet my mind as much as is probably necessary to really rejuvenate my soul.  But it helps.

Nothing is more satisfying to me on a daily basis than those few minutes before I go to sleep in a dark and quiet room.  Bliss!

At Borders you can a CD of a coffee house session with Simon and Garfunkel from the early '60s. It has the first public recording of "the Boxer". The music and acoustics are very cool and different from the studio recordings. Thanks for a lovely post.

I've always loved this song.  It's funny how I used to need the TV or radio on during the day, just for some noise.  I wasn't comfortable in a quiet home alone.  Now, it's an awesome treat to have silence.  I love to shut off all the noise and just enjoy the peaceful quiet.  Is that part of growing older?

From the desk of David Dee,

Gary, this is one of my favorite songs. Very peaceful and has a calming effect. I think that is why people enjoy sleep..given that it is a quiet one without horrific dreams. :D As the movie says, 'silence is GOLDEN'.

hi Gary, I love that song....wonderful metaphor. My favourite place to be on earth is up north on Sandy Island...no electricity and at night it is pure darkness...black as black comes. Thanks for taking me back there today... Jo

Hi Gary, I don't know is I know what the sound of silence is, with 2 teenager daughters in the house. The other day my daughter was sitting in front of the TV with my laptop working on a school project. Her cell phone was vibrating and she had her I Touch in her ear.  It was time to put the phone away, turn off the TV and the I touch.  Too much!  Finding peace and quiet today is nearly impossible!

Gary, though a little before my time, I listened to this song a lot! I'm an old S&G fan.

Your post makes me want to get out of town without the laptop& cell phone.

That has always been one of my favorites by Simon and Garfunkel. Your thoughts here are also very appropriate, It is never too late to get out and be alone with your thoughts. Thas is a cool picture too.

Wonderful post.  Since our children have flown the nest, we have turned off cable tv and made a few other changes in our lives to increase the quiet.  I love it.  And I see now in the absence of noise in my own life how a little quiet would benefit many people.

It's one of the reasons I love rainy days: there's a quiet that comes when it rains, that I just can't feel when the sun is blazing and it's wicked hot outside.  Quiet is lovely...and so was your post, Gary. -- Tanya in Montreal
