I had a computer that had a really slow connection. I thought it was my internet provider. They had me go to a website called speakeasy to test my speed. The address is www.speakeasy.net it is really nice to know that you are paying for a faster connection that you are getting it. I first tried this and found out that I was only getting 3MB downloading and 1.5MB uploading, so I trashed my linksys router and got an apple wireless router, then I realized that my ISP was right. it was my shoddy equipment. now I am getting 30MB downloading and 5MB uploading. much better. -Ingrid
Hi Ingrid~ so the culprit to a slow connection could be our router?? I have a linksy router...
I assume the Linksy was slow and the Apple router was better because you are using a Mac. I wonder if this would hold true with a Windows PC?
Thanks Ingrid, I didn't know about this site. I'll have to try as I thought my internet service provider was to blame.
Best Regards, Jay
Interesting I can't wait to get to the office in the morning and check mine out.
We recently changed out out router as well -- and it was a good thing to do.
Vicky, In my case it was my Linksys router. I had a fairly new one too. I had three main suspects in the slow connection speed. 1. Computer, 2. ISP, & 3. Wireless Connection. SO... I replaced the computer first(it was time) with a new Apple iMac. still slow... so I called Linksys to see if they could help. I had a router that was 4 days out of warranty 1 year and 4 days old and they would not help me. So I bought an Apple router and problem solved! no more slow connection... anyone want a free Linksys Router? I can't sell it on eBay... wouldn't be right, but it "works" at least technically.
Oh and Dan, I use Cox Cable Internet and I am happy with them!
Thanks! -Ingrid
Steve I have a computer running Windows7 on this same network as well. Still MUCH faster! (same faster speed) The cool thing about the Apple Router is that it has 2 connections at the same time one for you and one for guests, this way you don't have to share your password or connection.. and your friends and neighbors can get on the net too. pretty nice. -Ingrid
bob & carolin... yep. this has made my days on my computer much less stressful.
David Z. You are welcome... my hours and weeks of frustration summed up in this small blog can hopefully help others. -Ingrid
Ingrid,
Good blog with plenty of good information, I would like to write more at this time, but I can't, I need to work, keep the great blogs coming !
Thanks for the tip Ingrid. When I call my Internet provider to complain about a slow connection, they blame it on my wireless network, and when I call them, of course they blame it on my Internet provider.
Gary! YES!!! I was caught up in that vicious cycle too!! Turns out for me that my ISP was legit! I really let them have it once or twice too... (Sorry Cox Cable) They were great though.
If I was asked just ONE more time to bypass the router... which was nearly physically impossible because my cable connection is behind my TV and high above my fireplace in a cubby just big enough for my TV... I was going to s-n-a-p ... and write a STRONGLY worded email and then delete it before I sent it.

Wow - I just upgraded to the highest speed possible in my area (West Hollywood) with Time Warner and my Download is 15 MB and my Upload is 1.5 MB
This is a big improvement from AT&T who only provide 5Mb and 0.5MB.
Stewart,
It's most likely because there are so many more people in your area. Cable seriously slows down when there are too many people online at once. I live in a smaller area with great technology. Great for internet connections, not so great for shopping. -Ingrid
