Village of Whispering Pines, North Carolina

I love Whispering Pines, North Carolina!  I have made this Village my permanent home since 1998, but I was first introduced to it in 1970 when I helped my parents find a building lot for their future retirement home.  Like many residents from the Northeast, they were looking for a less harsh climate, and had headed for Florida to see if that was the answer.  For them it wasn't, but a spot part way between, the Sandhills of North Carolina, turned out to be the perfect alternative.  Four season changes, with only a few below freezing days in January and no more than a month of hot weather in August, was paradise compared to the extended cold of the North.

It was a leap of faith to choose Whispering Pines, North Carolina at that time because the community was just getting started, the dream of A.B. Hardee who saw the potential of a golf and lake community long before such developments became so popular.  Not many roads were cut in, but a beautiful Country Club with 36 holes of golf and six crystal lakes on which to boat and fish beckoned those smart enough to find this little known oasis.  Admirals, Generals, CEO's, Educators, and Health Care Officials were well represented in the first wave of residents.  As news of the area spread, usually by word of mouth, more and more Northeast and Mid-Westerners who were tired of battling the snow and extended dreary days of winter came to enjoy the special ambience of Whispering Pines.       

Today, the original 2,500 acres of the Village are virtually built out, with more than 1200 homes and over 2400 residents living within the Village limits.  There are very few building lots remaining, but five new subdivisions have been approved and construction of their infrastructures and initial homes is currently underway.  There are several single family home rental opportunities in the Village, so it is not too soon to pick out your lot and house plan if you choose to build a new home and start to enjoy the welcoming and inclusive community spirit which is uniquely Whispering Pines.   

There are also always opportunities to buy existing homes, with prices generally ranging from $200,000 to $500,000 with the average in the high $200,000's to low $300,000's.  Many are newer homes, but some of the best building lots were selected by the first residents.  Many of the older properties have been upgraded over the years, while others offer the renovator or investor a unique opportunity to bring new life back to an original gem. Three recently renovated homes been resold for over $100,000 more than they did less than three years before, proving that there is a vibrant market for the right property that has been judiciously upgraded.
