The small town of Kannapolis best known for being the birth place of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt will now have something else to talk about. Powerhouse developer Castle & Cooke are in the midst of working on a $500 million project that when finished will change the face of the entire town. In addition the new 350-acre research campus that is being built downtown, Castle & Cooke will be adding additional commercial space, retail space with condominium and townhouse units above. The design will have a similar look to the Birkdale Village in Huntersville and will be integrated into the existing Kannapolis Village.
According to Anthony Sparrow, vice president of residential development for Castle & Cooke the master plan is to bring revenue to the area relatively quickly by creating jobs as well as building an exciting place to live, work and play. 
Just outside of downtown, Castle & Cooke also purchased the Kannapolis Country Club and a large tract of land off of West A Street. Love Golf Design founded by golf great Davis Love III was hired to redesign the existing golf course. The entire course will also include new sod upon completion. They are truly going the extra mile to make the refinished golf club that will be called "The Club at Irish Creek" one of the best in the Carolina's.
As for the Luxury Home community it will consist of 585 home sites and phase one at the country club should break ground in the early fall. The builder program will consist of 15 to 20 of the area's finest luxury home builders and all plans will go through an architectural review. Homes will range from the $500's to $1.5 million. Amenities will have a family atmosphere and will include a junior Olympic sized swimming pool, a silo slide, kiddie pool, splash pool, lazy river, sports court, seven tennis courts, a glade park, gardens, conservatory and greenhouse. Walking trails and pocket parks will also be found throughout the community.
This major project should really put Kannapolis on the map and turn this once small North Carolina town into one the finer places in the Charlotte area to relocate. It will truly have it all when completed. Castle & Cooke is looking to attract high income professions and create an alternative to the difficult commute to Charlotte. It will be interesting to see the transformation of a town.
