Good Business Dept: Be kind and provide service to neighbors and friends

By
Real Estate Agent with LRA Real Estate Group

My wife and I are both agents in a fairly average and ordinary neighborhood. We attend church in the local area, and have 12 other members of the congregation who are also real estate agents.

Dilemma : So, who gets the referral when everyone knows everyone?

We have decided to provide service in a different way.  Baking and delivering homemade bread. (My mother-in-law would be shocked again). We found a VERY SIMPLE recipe to make bread from scratch, without my bread maker that I gave away 10 years ago.

Who can resist the smell of warm, fresh bread, just out of the oven? We are baking 2-4 loaves at a time, and delivering it in the evenings and on weekends. In fact, we just delivered 4 loaves tonight!

Here is the other good part. We are in escrow with an investment house for a member of our congregation- that was a result of service provided, including our fresh bread. So, why did the family choose us when there were others to pick from? We believe it was due to the service we provided.

My advice: it is very good to give, and sometimes you do receive in return.

Thank you for sharing your experience with connecting to others.  In the past, I have used a technique of delivering chocolates to realtor offices, but I've always seen it as a 'marketing' activity.  Your story caused me to realize that I have lost the touch of connecting with people.  Thanks.

It's all in the creativity.....I like to deliver custom bagged doggie treats to people in my neighborhood. I pick up a big bag at Costco and have a kid deliver on Saturdays. I always have enough that the bag could last a few days, with my picture and information on it. Every week, like clockwork, they and their dogs remember me when they go to sell.

Very creative, Bryan. Bread says 'hearth and home' to many people, and being given something unexpected always warms the heart. Thanks to Kathy Clulow for alerting me to your post.

I think what you do is very very nice. You will surely stand out from your competition, however, I would rather be known as an expert marketer, knowledgeable agent and responsive salesperson than a good baker. I know they are not mutually exclusive, but the time it takes and the expectation it creates......I wish you well.

Well this is very timely for me.  My office partner called me the other day and told me she met someone that I know.  Turns out they came in to see her after an open house and saw my card on the desk.  When I heard it was someone from church I was stunned because I sold the minister a house last year.  Their comment was, "She needs to do a better job of letting people know she's a Realtor."   Wake up call!

Thanks for comments and support. It seems like there are many others who have similar thoughts and ideas. Whether it is chocolate, cookies or bread, people just want to be appreciated. I had an attorney friend cool me down one day. He said I should take a cherry pie to someone I was angry with and make friends. Honey attracts better than vinegar. Good advice and saved me money. I changed my attitude.
