Richfield, the Urban Hometown – Woodlake Nature Center
The largest Richfield MN park is Wood Lake Nature Center located at 6710 Lake Shore Drive. Covering 150 acres of land, Wood Lake offers 3 miles of peaceful walking paths right in the middle of the city and a shelter. The Nature Center performs a very important role in educating people about local wild life, especially educating students of Richfield schools Students enjoy 2-3 field trips a year to Wood Lake, learn about changes in nature throughout the year, and how animals survive, and what are things to do or not to do while visiting the park.
Woodlake Lake Nature Center covers 150 acres of nature preserve, with miles of walking trails. In order to preserve natural habitat of the wildlife, no pets, bikes, or roller blades are allowed here. Nature Center’s naturalists provide thousands of hours of educational programming to variety of visitors.
Biggest group that regularly visits the center are students from Richfield Public Schools. They learn about life cycles, variety of animals and their habitat, about producing maple syrup, and berries. In wintertime, the snowshoe, discover animal tracks, and find out why it is important take care of animals during particularly cold and snowy weather.
Wood Lake Nature Center offers a variety of activities throughout the year. Here some of the classes you can take this April:
Bird House Building
April 11 – Build a recycled cedar wren house. Get tips on birdhouse placement and maintenance.
Two classes: 1:00 to 2:30 or 3:00 to 4:30 pm
Earth Day Every Day
April 18 – Earth-friendly scavenger hunt. You help clean all corners of the park and expect prizes at the end.
Wild Greens Taste Great
April 25 – Natural cooking class. Learn and bring home recipes to prepare healthy low-cost meals.
1:00 to 3:30 or 3:00 to 4:30
