What' s In A Name? (a domain name, that is...)

Apologies is someone already brought this up, but i just have to blog about this.

Fellow Realtors, when you picked your domain name(s) did you really take the time to think about it? How will it fair in the search engines, do people think of your domain name when they search for real estate?

First, I think EVERYONE should register their own name.....its your identity, keep it yours. Unless you want to stay under the radar, its a cheap investment.

I own many domain names, atleast 15, although some dont even have websites. Who knows, you may be lucky enough to figure out a latest and greatest, something that did'nt happen yet but will.

Take the two gentlemen that purchased business.com for 7.5 million in 1999. Many people laughed at the two, but who is laughing now?

Business.com just sold for 350 million dollars, JUST THE NAME!

So when choosing your new domain name, think about it, it may be worth more than you think!

This has been blogged about here on AR, but it is an important topic. You are marketing yourself and your domain name and preferably your own name is extremely important. Most people can get their own name cheap. I was not so lucky, my name (Brad Snyder) is also the name of a Cleveland Indians ball player. I had to pay $1500.00 for my own name, but I think it was that valuable to me. All agents should buy their name. In most cases it costs about $8.00 a year. Market yourself.

Thanks for the post!

Hey Dave,

Some good points here.

And I'm in agreement with Brad about owning your own name. A couple of years ago I registered the names of my grown children, spouses, and their children. They have them all for the next 10 years. Who knows if they will use them, it's up to them. I just wanted to get them while they were still available.

Let me know, has anyone had any luck buying a Domain Name once they become available from someone else?

There is a website called www.justdropped.com where you can watch for names that become available.  For example you can search your city name for associated names that become available.

Hi Dave!
