Seattle Home Inspector’s “Paint-dar” activated.

By
Home Inspector with Charles Buell Inspections Inc.

Like so many things in life, if things appear to be “too good to be true” they most likely are too good to be true.

The other day I walked into a bathroom at an inspection and saw this VERY cool sink that looked to be brand new.  Everything about this sink said “old,” and yet it looked very nice.  As a home inspector my “paint-dar” was immediately activated.

Schoolhouse Sink

In this case my paint-dar was spot on----as closer examination revealed the beginning of peeling paint around the drain.

 Paint peeling around drain

But, back to the cool sink----I had never seen a sink quite like this one.

While Steve Smith would claim that I am older than this sink, I still had never seen one----perhaps he has.  After a little Internet research I found a picture of one that was called a “schoolhouse sink” and the multiple faucets sort of make that description make sense.  Certainly some sort of “communal” application seems likely.

Since I know Steve went to school in a “one-room school house”----chances are he has seen one----of course that school had a “four-holer” too.

I did see a sink in a public bathroom once that had this communal approach----but that one was not painted.

Public Bathroom Sink

It appeared to be made out of concrete.

The old fixtures have a real charm to them, but they do need to be maintained . . . not so easy Charles.

Frank I know what you mean----I have a 1928 vintage cast iron tub that really isn't worth doing anything with----wish it was.  Sooner or later I am going to have to break the thing up.

Charles, do you frown on painting a sink?  Or refrigerator?  Or bathtub?

Barbara, my only concern with it is that some people think they are getting something as good as the original surface.  I think that when tubs, showers and sinks etc have been re-finished it should be disclosed to the buyer so that when the buyer takes a shower and the paint all peels off they are not surprised.  Of course this usually does not get by the inspector.  I wish that last statement was true. :)

Hi Charles,

The internet just delivers . How did we ever live with out it. I recall seeing the later type of sink in commercial applications but not the first one. The finish is lifting is  probably was a re-glaze gone bad. The problem with the re-glaze is it can never be as strong as the original finish, be it porcelain or on steel.

The old stadium in Washington DC, called Griffith stadium, had very long communal sinks with one drain (20 or so faucets in a row sharing a single drain) and long communal URINALS, 30 feet long or so, which were accessed from both sides!!  There was no running water in the urinals, just a drain...  Yikes!  I remember as a child using one and being so low down I was quite impressed by the pungency of the moment!  It is one of my only memories of the stadium!

I have found a few painted tubs, but never a sink. Not a good idea either way.

It's a really neat looking sink -- would be great in a family of many kids!   If paint is peeling -- is there a way to refinish that kind of a sink -- without paint??

Nutsy, I do have something "blunt" for you

Alexsandra, I doubt it----I have heard that they can actually be re-glazed----but I think it would likely be cost prohibitive.
