I've been leaving money on the table for too long.
For years we've received incentives, invitations, and coupons for discounted and even free products. Seldom have I taken the time to use the offers. What an idiot--this is free stuff, or at least reduced price stuff. Had I grown up in the era of my parents or grandparents, the Great Depression, I would have known better. Every dollar saved in one area of life can be put to use in another area of life.
One of the things I noticed generally about people who actually experienced the Great Depression was their thriftiness, using things well past what I thought was their useful life, and a general distrust of banks and credit. Looking back on the past few years, the old timers were right on all three of those concerns.
I was looking at Twitter feed a few months ago and saw an interesting string from someone with the handle "mymemphismommy". She had a tweet about moving to San Antonio. I took a look at the website she was promoting, My Memphis Mommy. This site is a super site of bargains, discounts, tips, rebates, and suggestions about money saving ideas in several areas of every day life. Basically, how to avoid leaving money on the table.
When she moved to San Antonio, she began a new site here and named it "My South Central Texas Mommy". Another great site with deals for the San Antonio and South Central Texas area. I met with the creator of the site and concept, Amy Harvey, last week. Amy has a network of "Mommies" in several US cities who develop and provide content for what I call discount super sites. on the Internet. They aggregate the deals and make it easy for the consumer to shop for deals. They do a good job of checking to make sure the stores will honor the deals before they are posted. This really makes it easy for a consumer to take advantage of the offers.
If you like to save money and you are in the south Texas area, subscribe to the My South Central Texas Mommy blog.
Want to see if your city or state has a "My Mommy" site? Follow me to tomorrow's post.
Sometime in May, My South Central Texas Mommy and I will host a live event for people in the area to learn about how to stretch their money and other money saving ideas. More on this to follow.
