Searcy in the 40's continued. Corner of N Sowell and W McRae looking East.

A blog a day or so ago showed the mud street leading to the house where my husband grew up on the very fringe of Searcy Arkansas.  In the batch of pictures was this one also showing the street when looking East from the driveway of the Duncan house.

I've never seen a more beautiful child than this happy one playing with his tricycle but the interest is in the houses on the corner behind him. The old one on the right was torn down probably 40 years ago.  You can see a rock house on the left side and it's still there. The huge barn is gone along with the outbuildings but the rock house, strong enough to last forever, is still there.

Corner McRae and Sowell Old Searcy

Trees block the view again but the electric poles are still there!  Rock house in Searcy ARMcRae St Searcy ARThe rock house was evidently built by the person who was doing the very complex rock and brick laying.  The porch on this house has very low arches and could have been done with no ladder at all.

Now that we pay attention, rock houses similar to this one are found all over the city and the county.  They last a long time!!!

Hi Barbara ~ What fun! I love stone houses but we don't have any like these in my neck of the woods. We have either older (1830s or 1840s? maybe) granite block houses and then houses from the early 1900s made of rounded rocks or boulders. All wonderful!

That's a fun part of town in that Deener Creek is just North of the property. In the mid 40's my good friend, Charles Barnett, lived at the West corner of of McRae and Hwy 16. We spent a lot of time around Deener Creek. Here's a map section to put it in prespective for all you Searcians.

Also, Here's the Google Man's view of the rock house.

Would that rock/brick house be on West McRae Street?

Would that beautiful little boy be none other than Mr. Roger?

Thank you, ActiveRain, for putting Barbara back in the saddle again.

Elizabeth, thanks for the comment.  I really thought we at Activerain were down under.

Don, thanks for the map and the picture of the rock house.  Perhaps now we can get some fishing stories on the blog.

Ludean, the kid is my husband's brother.

Godson Nutsy, didn't we have a lot of free time while the rain was falling......

Adam, thanks.

Anita, I've forgotten how to ride!  The child is Montie, not Dude.  See Don's map for the location.
