Having moved to Pell City, AL from Maryland I had never heard the expression blackberry winter. While browsing at my local garden center, I heard the young lady working there tell another shopper that the plants she was looking for would be stocked after blackberry winter. Totally confused, I had to ask what she was talking about. She explained that blackberry winter was a old regional weather saying that when spring is here and you think it is time to plant, zap the cold weather hits again. This usually happens during early May when the blackberry plants are in bloom.
To all of my Pell City neighbors and St. Clair County friends, we are in blackberry winter.
