Agent Genius raised the issue - Tough Love

By
Real Estate Agent with HER Realtors

During ActiveRain's recent "rough patch" Agent Genius raised the issue:

ActiveRain problems mounting, hopes apology is enough  referring to  the video of Kelan, an apology from ActiveRain for the proxy errors, the bad gateway messages and ultimately the system being down for some time.

Obviously for many of us the apology was enough.... To borrow a cliche from an old movie... "Love means never having to say you are sorry" many members LOVE ActiveRain.

Perhaps it is too early to talk about this with our Outside Blogs not yet up.... that is MY real concern.

Agent Genius raised the issue

Benn Rosales of Agent Genius shared a couple of graphs... one for ActiveRain.com and another for Localism.com and said:

"Since April 2009, ActiveRain has seen a dramatic decline in unique visitors, from 1.1M per month to roughly 644k in March of 2010, according to Compete.com, leaving some to speculate not only on the effectiveness of ActiveRain, but its longterm viability."

My graphs from Compete.com are for the same time.

ActiveRain.com graph from Compete.com

Localism.com graph from Compete.com

Are the graphs for ActiveRain and Localism telling the true story or is there something missing?

Maybe it is time for some tough love on our part.  Not demanding more from ActiveRain.com  (Bob, Jonathan, Brad, etc.)  but  tough love for ourselves.  Is our participation on ActiveRain productive? Maybe my understanding of what happened with the servers is faulty.  Maybe it is my dislike for much of the Members Only content on ActiveRain but  I picture the content on ActiveRain big and bloated enough to cause the proxy errors but not traffic producing, because it is INVISIBLE TO SEARCH ENGINES... WORTHLESS invisible to all but members.

Benn wrote on Agent Genius:

ActiveRain is currently down, completely rendering all hosted real estate blogs dead, impacting over 100,000 businesses.

Gary... do the traffic numbers lie?  I love Compete.com so I have watched all year, the graphs showing a decline in ActiveRain were no surprise to me.

Why server errors if there is less traffic?

I wondered if the lost traffic is redirected to hundreds of Outside Blog URLs. Or if it is bloated members only content.

The rumors of ActiveRain's demise...

"leaving some to speculate not only on the effectiveness of ActiveRain, but its longterm viability."

social media Diva's throwing temper tantrums on Twitter because their content was not showing up on ActiveRain

Benn's asking if an apology was enough?

Lotsa hysterical posts on ActiveRain saying the content was lost...

Maureen - I really don't understand all the emotional posts about AR.  To me it comes down to a simple business decision.  I'll hang in there and see if AR continues with its great Google Juice and if it doesn't then I'll stop being a paying member.  I've gotten great value from AR, but all this stuff about being loyal or not loyal to AR is crazy.  Are we business professionals or not?  If so, then let's make business decisions based on AR's impact on our businesses.  It's too early to know the long-term effects of the server problems.  I'm going to see if the numbers recover before making a decision to pull the plug on AR.  I'd like to see less emotion and more logic as members make their decisions about whether to continue with AR or not.

"I'd like to see less emotion and more logic as members make their decisions about whether to continue with AR or not.

Ask me if I care?  Move along and read something else, if this or anything is too emotional for you.  There is a lot of emotion out there, if you thinks YOUR  content has been visible or readable in the past 12 months, you are fooling yourself.

What good is good Google juice if the posts will not open or close with a proxy error?  Don't fool yourself Gail..

ActiveRain is a business.  It is about $. ActiveRain has loyal members, some would say "fools."  People paying for RainMaker and Outside blogs and vendor ads are what matters.

Hi Maureen...interesting post, love marketing makes Apple King, yet is it a two way street? Apple charges double for it's PC's and Lap Tops to their Blind Followers...are we headed the same way?... maybe. At present AR does everything they can to satisfy and help us in our business online.

They (ActiveRain Corp)  do but are WE (ActiveRain members)  shooting ourselves in the foot by using AR as a watercooler and standing around telling one another war stories, talking politics and not producing content for the search engines?

I think we as a community forgot about transparency... a couple of years ago.

All the members suffer when the proxy errors, bad gateways, etc.  happen.  Some like Loreena Yao who uses AR for business lose leads... others who use AR to catch up with friends or to debate politics in Members Only posts are disappointed when they can't get on or get knocked off.

"All your eggs in one basket" means more if you are using the site to generate business.

Will members who buy Outside Blogs or pay for RainMaker continue to pay for a site that  is not up?   Or won't allow a consumer to  enter?  A drama queen threw a big hissy fit last week on Twitter, Agent Genius (and probably elsewhere because HER content was down... I don't know her, don't know what she posts, whether she is grandfathered or paying for RainMaker, but she was certainly taking it personally.   I don't even know if she has an Outside Blog... I should go look.

I believe she is grandfathered. She does have an Outside Blog.  Will she continue to pay for an Outside Blog?  Did not sound like it last week.

Hi Maureen ~ Those numbers are troubling to me. I guess I need to check out compete.com and follow them myself.

You're right too, it doesn't make sense that we have so many proxy errors, bad gateways etc, when there's less traffic.

I think the dust needs to settle before I make up my mind on what I really think. I know I haven't been happy in the past months with all the proxy errors and how that must have impacted the consumers experience when they visited my AR blog. (Even more with my outside blog). I'm a paying member and I expect more. If I don't get it in the coming months, then I guess I will need to re-evaluate the situation. I like it here though, so I want to give it more time before I make any rash decisions that I may regret later.

I was in the software business for many years and most recently an executive of a hosted software company like AR (very different business, though).  All I can say is all these proxy errors and downtime are evidence of very poor IT planning & execution or management restrictions ($$$) on IT or both.

In either case, it is all inexcusable and evidence of something very, very wrong in the technical department. And for sure, not a place where I would place much of my business model...it's not a question of loyalty, but of confidence and business prudence.

Denise  I am addicted to Compete.com so I was aware of the missing traffic.  Puzzled by it.  I want to believe the Outside blogs are the missing traffic.

I would love to know why AR says the proxy errors are due to increased popularity with the traffic dropping.

Is your Outside blog up? Mine both seem to be.  No header photo and no headshot but the content is up.

Sally  The story of AR is here somewhere, it was a contact management system for a brokerage? Lead management? It was not planned to be the biggest real estate network.  I kind of wish the money and time  would have been invested in late 2006 early 2007 to make it stable...  that story is here too... there was no money... then there was going to be money, then Move.com moved in a different direction.  Then HouseValues.com (?) under a new name invested.... then there was a settlement with Move.com

Perhaps for you it is NOT a question of loyalty but for some of us it is.  I have been here since 2006.  It does not always work but I am not going to have a drama queen hissy fit on Twitter... I witnessed one last Thursday, Friday?  I had to look for her AR blog when I was able to.  I don't get it... would she provide content to readers on a WP.org blog?  She had very little here so I don't know what the drama was that AR was down.

ActiveRain to me is Jonathan, Bob, Brad, Jorgen, Kerrie (I always spell her name wrong) and other people.  ActiveRain was Matt Heaton, Caleb Mardini, Matt's wife...Lydia to me it was always people, so yes it is a matter of loyalty.

If you feel the need to leave Sally, bye. Good luck...  Do you have a WP.org blog? Tutorial about how to export content was on the dashboard. Bob Stewart of ActiveRain sponsored the webinar.   Not all that used the tutorial are leaving AR, just posting their content on their own blog, something that they always were able to do.

Any news on when our outside blog headers will be back up? Never heard of compete.com, but will check it out. Amazing what I learn in the Rain!  :-)

Laurie mine are up.  Or were.  I can get to them putting in the URL anyway.  I am not sure if I can get to them going to my Left side bar on my AR profile though.

Google links open to my Outside Blogs.

My head shot and the header image are missing (neither a biggie for me) all the images in the posts are there, all the content seems to be there.  My RSS 's are working.  That's how I realized 'Worthington Old and News' was up.  I saw it on Twitter... via RSS.

oooops just realized you know they are up just looking for your header...  my bad.  not heard anything yet.

Hi Maureen ~ No, my outside blog is not up. I haven't given up on ActiveRain, but I have given up on that. It's been nothing but trouble since day one. (I have a Wordpress.org blog, so I'm not missing it).

Or are you like Lori waiting for the header?

Hi Maureen ~ I can get in now too. Still no header, but at least it's there...

And yes, I'm from Wales. Do I have a wonderful accent? Clients seem to love it. I don't think it's particularly Welsh, more British, but one of the clients I'm working with right now tells me I sound like her Aunt in Wales, so what do I know?

I love accents!

The flag of Wales is wonderful.

I am glad you are able to see your blog.  Do you have it feeding anywhere, Facebook or Twitter?  Lori Cain said her she thought her feeds were not working. Mine fed to both Twitter and Facebook without me touching it.

I don't like what Facebook does to the feed Maureen, so I stopped doing that and post links manually. (Plus Lori is right, it's not stable). My AR blog posts to twitter, so does my Wordpress blog.

By the sound of it not all outside blogs are created equal. I've never been all that happy with mine. Not all that versatile either, not like Wordpress anyway, where your own creativity is your only boundary.

Glad you like the Wales flag - we love our Welsh Dragon!:-)

I love my Outside Blogs... I love the fact that they show up on the sidebar of my WP blog and Google credits the WP blog with their keywoods.  I suppose that may not be that great if people end up there looking for hyperlocal content because it is not there. hmmmm
