Tripe, the recipe...

Tripe Tripe the recipe

"In a large pot combine the tripe, vinegar and enough water to cover the tripe by 2 inches. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer and cook until the tripe is tender, about 1 to 1 1/2 days "

There are actually lots of recipes for tripe.  Susan Mangigian, an ActiveRain member in Pensylvannia and I were chatting about tripe on Inna Hardison's featured post:

Swimming in the Rain takes BALLS - deal with it...

Terry a member in British Columbia called Inna's post tripe?  Or perhaps Terry was not calling Inna's post tripe. Perhaps looking for a recipe for tripe?   Calling something "tripe" is not complementary?

Tripe the food is stomach... or guts?  from a cow, sheep, pig. Perhaps other animals? Offal? I think so.

Tripe the recipe -  Haggis

Did you know the Scottish taste treat Haggis is tripe?  Trawling for tripe? Paul Slaybaugh in AZ may know his tripe. The Scott... Scotts in Scottsdale is related to Scottland the country? I had not make a connection. Someone from Scottland retired to AZ?  Paul was offering Haggis on Facecbook recently... Haggis is cooked in a sheeps stomach...

According to the Wikipedia listing for tripe the food, not the insult... there are lots of different ways to cook tripe... lotsa recipes, Kenyan, Pensylvannia Dutch, Nigerian, German, Polish, Romanian, Spanish, Portuguese, Irish, English, French. Scottish.... Haggis is there.

Tripe the recipe - cut and paste content  for your blog

Did you know if you cut and paste a recipe to ActiveRain you can NOT take points for it?  Haven't been able to since sometime in 2008 (?)  Seriously! It's in the guidelines... there is a guidleline link on the bottom of every page of ActiveRain.

From the AR guidelines about posting recipes, jokes, inspirational quotes:

"The point system is intended to encourage and reward genuine effort. Points for blogging will only be awarded for your own majority original content. Examples of what doesn't qualify for points: jokes, recipes, inspirational quotes, poems, re-published marketing materials like newsletters, press releases and news articles, information from government websites, bible verses, large copied sections of the MLS, or posts that only contain links and keywords, but offer no value for consumers."

ActiveRain is for majority original content... not for cutting and pasting something someone else published somewhere.  I think pretty much from the very beginning but at some point they looked at it and added a guideline saying in effect "don't take points for recipes, jokes, etc."

Jon Zolsky (Inna's father, did you know that?)  wrote about recipes recently... Jon's post got featured. Will you Reblog a Recipe?

Well actually  Jon if it was a tripe recipe how could I resist Re-Blogging?

Tripe the recipe - turns out there's lotsa tripe recipes

So if you came here looking for a tripe recipe you are going to have to use this link to get to the recipe for  Roman-Style Tripe Trippa alla Romana on the Food Network, from Mario Batali. I am NOT cutting and pasting a recipe here.... I don't believe I have ever posted a recipe to ActiveRain.

I was sure Susan's mother cooking tripe was a Pensylvannia thing not an Italian thing...  even though I don't know where Susan grew up...I assumed PA.   First tripe recipe I run into is Trippa alla Romana..

Maureen - it's fascinating what we learn here in the Rain.  Who would have thunk that we'd be dscussing tripe of all things.  Truly, i didn't mind the insult too much.  Not a biggie.  On the bright side - when I go totally broke, i can always cook me some tripe:-)

Susan says tripe stinks... I've seen it in the store.  I don't think I could cook it or eat it.

When people make comments like that, it makes them look bad IMHO.  When Jason or Paul or someone says it... it is different, we all know they are joking.

We'd all feature something different because we all have different taste...  Susan's parents ate tripe for pete's sake ... mine made us eat liver and beef tongue thank goodness they did not have a taste for tripe.

Maureen, this is a hoot.  I only knew it was Italian because it was... in gravy (red sauce for the uninitiated or Jersey types like Lenza)!  Never fear, my parents made their share of liver and onions too and I couldn't stand the smell of that cooking either!!  Since some people like Tripe, let's choose to see Terry's remark as a compliment.  "I can't believe this tripe got featured" is perhaps Terry being incredulous that Active Rain found such a great post!  ha!  Enjoy the weekend.

Maureen and Susan - I am a pro at livers with onions, and mine are always yummy.  Now, tongue is a whole other story. Mom used to make it and it always freaked me out. Jon picks them things up at Publix and threatens to lick my (or one of the kiddos') faces with them things.

As for Terry - truly, ladies, i didn't mind in the least.  He stated an opinion, which is something I always welcome on my blogs.  That being said, i found his posts too dull to want to comment on, so I guess I win.:-)

Inna, you were a winner before you went over to his blog!  I'm guessing he has no idea what happened after he left that comment! lol!  He inspired a post about tripe for crap's sake!

Jon... I changed it... It said hours.  I thought I should radically change it.  Copyright you know?

Susan It was a long time before I ever heard sauce referred to as gravy.  I think

Thanks all for the comments.

Maureen, you taught us all something new...except for Inna and Jon, who already knew they were related, LOL...

I never ate the stuff myself, but my grandmother used to buy it. For what, I never had any idea.

But insulting? Yes. The term was used in the movie "Chicken Run" - I've never heard such a load of tripe....you couldn't miss the insinuation...

its a favorite for the hispanic population.  Especially in those taquerias.

Years back the tripe was pulled off the menu because of disease.  But it seems to have made it back.

See guys, maybe Terry meant it in that 'favorite' sort of way?  Thanks Angella :-)

I'll be watching for it Angelia!!!   To avoid it at all costs.

I would bet during the mad cow scare (is that over?) there was not a lot of interest  in tripe.  Menudo is hispaninc tripe (and I mean that in the nicest way)?

Frank McCourt (?) McCort? (?) the Irish writer who wrote  'Angela's Ashes' wrote about the family eating sheeps brain for  Christmas.  Or perhaps  it was pig brain or cow brain.   Another organ to avoid eating for me.

Thinking about all this could make me a vegan.

Inna I am sure Terry meant "favorite"   do you think if we all went out and said "What tripe" on blog posts we could change the perception of the word in the RE blogiverse anyway?

Maureen, we could venture over to Tanya's latest post where Terry stated that he writes a post every single day cause he enjoys it... That could lead to interesting descriptors:-)

Was Tanya's post about NOT writing a post everyday a swipe at Terry? I noticed it.  I think Terry's posts are not my taste... too tame and the images he uses to illustrate them (clip art as I recall) don't  grab me... I did not go back to see if she got a conversation started but I did not get it.  Who cares what A PERSON thinks of your blog or frequency of your posts.

Then again I usually write multiple posts for consumers most days.  What someone in the industry thinks about my posts doesn't matter at al to me. Tripe?  Boring...

Maureen - nope, Tanya's was totally innocent:-)  Oh, and I absolutely don't care what anyone thinks of my posts - never did.  Most who read me know that.  It makes this whole game a lot more fun ... not caring.
