I just read an interesting article online at MSN Money by Jason Buckland titled The most stressful jobs in Canada. Lo and behold, there was my profession on the list, ranked #8.
Here's what the article had to say about the REALTOR® or Real Estate Agent as noted in the article.
"Hours worked per week: 47.5"
"By almost any measure, real estate is the career that never sleeps. "The profession gives you absolutely no time off," says Luft. "You always have to be near your phone, constantly making connections, constantly being 'on.' Everyone's your client or potential client." Realtors are also forced to cope with an extremely competitive industry, difficult to deal with at any times, but especially challenging given the recent collapse in the global real estate market. And then there is the compensation. Most careers will pay your bills, for better or worse. But in real estate? "It's a profession that gives you no pay unless you make a sale," says Luft. Now that's pressure."
The other professions listed as stressful in the article were as follows.
1. Commercial Pilot
2. Taxi Driver
3. Photo Journalist
4. Fire Fighter
5. Corporate Executive
6. Nurse
7. Political Aide
8. Real Estate Agent
The article states that MSN contacted several human resource reps and placement agencies to compile their statistics. Click on the link above to check out the whole article.
How does this list differ from a similar survey of stressful U.S. professions, released in April, 2010? Check out the following article. Did real estate agent make it into the top ten?
Below are the top 10 most stressful jobs in the United States in 2010 according to the survey
1. Firefighter
2. Corporate Executive
3. Taxi Driver
4. Surgeon
5. Police Officer
6. Commercial Pilot
7. Highway Patrol Officer
8. Public Relations Officer
9. Advertising Executive
10. Real Estate Agent
Sure enough, real estate agent made the top ten so it is official. Being a real estate agent in North America is a stressful job. Those of us in the profession already know that, as do our families and friends. But I never really think about it since it is just part of my day to day business.
Having it acknowledged in print alongside some highly recognized stressful professions was a bit of an eye opener.
