Is Real Estate Sales A Stressful Profession? - The Surveys Say Yes

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Real Estate Centre Inc., Brokerage

I just read an interesting article online at MSN Money by Jason Buckland titled  The most stressful jobs in Canada. Lo and behold, there was my profession on the list, ranked #8.

Here's what the article had to say about the REALTOR® or  Real Estate Agent as noted in the article.  stressed

"Hours worked per week: 47.5"

"By almost any measure, real estate is the career that never sleeps. "The profession gives you absolutely no time off," says Luft. "You always have to be near your phone, constantly making connections, constantly being 'on.' Everyone's your client or potential client." Realtors are also forced to cope with an extremely competitive industry, difficult to deal with at any times, but especially challenging given the recent collapse in the global real estate market. And then there is the compensation. Most careers will pay your bills, for better or worse. But in real estate? "It's a profession that gives you no pay unless you make a sale," says Luft. Now that's pressure."

The other professions listed as stressful in the article were as follows.

1. Commercial Pilot

2. Taxi Driver

3. Photo Journalist

4. Fire Fighter

5. Corporate Executive

6. Nurse

7. Political Aide

8. Real Estate Agent

The article states that MSN contacted several human resource reps and placement agencies to compile their statistics.  Click on the link above to check out the whole article.

How does this list differ from a similar survey of stressful U.S. professions, released in April, 2010?  Check out the following article.  Did real estate agent make it into the top ten?

Below are  the top 10 most stressful jobs in the United States in 2010 according to the survey

1. Firefighter

2. Corporate Executive

3. Taxi Driver

4. Surgeon

5. Police Officer

6. Commercial Pilot

7. Highway Patrol Officer

8. Public Relations Officer

9. Advertising Executive

10. Real Estate Agent

Sure enough, real estate agent made the top ten so it is official.  Being a real estate agent in North America is a stressful job.  Those of us in the profession already know that, as do our families and friends. But I never really think about it since it is just part of my day to day business.

Having it acknowledged in print alongside some highly recognized stressful professions was a bit of an eye opener.

Jenny, why are we last on both lists? At least the other jobs have salaries (except maybe photojournalist). We have to learn how to manage our stress by making appointments with ourselves. Clients don't have to always know what we are doing, but it is definitely a challenge to have boundaries!

Jenny, most of the time, I'm not too stressed.  I'm in a transaction right now though that has been very stressful.  My experience with most of the stress I've encountered in real estate is that it wasn't necessary.  I think one of the Floyd Wickman lessons I like is "Don't be attached to the outcome". Works for a lot of situations.

Jobs are as stressful as you make them.  Get out of the kitchen if it is too hot!  Taxi driver, what is with that? Don't they have GPS?

wow, I must say that i do not get stressed much, I was an executive chef in my prior life and that was stress.  this business is not bad at all, it all in what you make it.. If you want the stress then you will have it, if you want to have fun and go wiith the flow you will have it.. I have done the most business I have in the almost 4 years I have been an agent and I need to say it is the least stress. I wish you luck one and all... Here is a little advise that works for me (maybe not everyone) REMEMBER YOUR WHY! THEN YOU FOCUS ON THE WHY AND YOU PUSH ON.

Very interesting surveys, Jenny.  So far my most stressful job has been as a driver education instructor, teacher, then real estate agent.  I am new to the real estate business less than a year so I need to give it time.

Jenny,

It came to me as a surprise. I enjoy having my own schedule, and I did  not think we can compare to police, but i was very wrong.

Jenny: That's interesting they put it higher in Canada. There is a lot of stress but as you noted, we in the trenches have become enured, but it's still there.

Jenny:  Stressful... are they serious ?  Someone even has to ASK that question.  It is much more stressful these days than before.  In years past... the stress was just about if we could "sell" something.  Now... with all the short sales and foreclosures... we actually hold the future of so many families... right in our hands, and in our expertise.  Now that's stress.

But, then again... if one thinks WE are under stress... how 'bout the stress these families are under ?  Wow !

Jenny, The stress of our present economy, the decisons Congress makes that affects our industry, unemployment, all play a key role in why REALTORS® made the lists. Now if I was a Student Driver teacher like Bruce above, that would send me over the top for sure!

Hi Kathy, you are right about that I'm sure.  I give you credit for working with your hubby.  I don't think I could work alongside my husband.

Hi Kristen, What you say is so true.  There are agents who earn more than surgeons, pilots and most of the top stressful jobs on the list.  As you said the potential is there and it's up to us to work it or not.  We have a license to make money.  If only it were that simple lol.

Hi Sharon, I remember when I first balked at getting a Blackberry because I wasn't sure I wanted to be immediately accessible.  Now it is just like second nature.  I can respond asap or not depending on the situation.  And many people are impressed when you get back to them within a minute.  Sometimes if you don't they have already moved on to the next agent.  Yes, that is stress but there are rewards too.

Hi Lynn, Good old Floyd.  He was the reigning guru when I started in the business in 1989.  Is he still around?  There are so many clones out there now, some are old school and some are refreshing.

Hi Robert, I think the taxi drivers have GPS but I don't think that is where the stress lies.  They rush to be the first ones there or they lose the fare.  They have to deal with people who rob them, throw up in their cabs, etc.  And then there is the traffic chaos.

Hi Dan, you must handle stress well lol.  Everyone has different stress levels and no two days are alike in this business as you know.  So I guess balance is the keyword.

Hi Ken, that is very wise advice.  I see those cooking shows on TV and I can't watch because I get stressed just watching.  I worked in the restaurant business so I understand that kind of stress.  So do you make up a batch of goodies to give your clients as closing gifts??

Hi Fred, I go for a massage once a month and I think the Gov't should pay for it for every Canadian.  Preventative medicine is the best medicine.  Maybe if we could all be a little more relaxed their would be less road and workplace rage.

Hi Bruce, I think you have a leg up because you have experience dealing with human behaviour and emotion with your past careers.  Also you must have tremendous patience so this will serve you well in this business.  Best of luck, you will do great.

Thanks John, and I appreciate your comment.

Hi Jon, yes I was really surprised when I read the Canadian report.  That's why I went searching for an American survey to see how it compared.  When I saw real estate agent there also, and mostly other similar occupations it hit home.  As I said in the post I have never seen real estate sales publicly acknowledged as being a stressful profession.

Hi Matt, you are right.  We live it on a day to day basis and I guess sometimes we don't give ourselves enough credit since our profession doesn't always get rave reviews from the general public.

Hi Karen Anne - I'm thinking of how to reply but what I want to say would actually turn into a full post.  You are so right about the stress people face when moving, for whatever reason they are making the move.  A true professional will have the knowledge and skills to handle clients with difficult situations.  They don't teach these skills in the licensing courses.  That's why it is so important to attend seminars and courses to educate ourselves on changing markets, etc.

Hi Wanda, we are fortunate here in Canada that we have not had to deal with short sales, and few foreclosures or Power of Sales as they are called here.  When I watch these shows on HGTV and see buyers in the U.S. buying homes in the $400,000 price range with zero down payment or 5 percent it is really scary.  I guess that's how it all started?  When prices dropped thereto did any equity built up.

hi Jenny,

I remember how stressed I used to get when I first joined this business (14 years ago). I then learned to not be attached to the outcome and not to get down if something didn't work out.

A good friend of mine who was a broker in Toronto for many years told me to always look upon real estate as a game...once I started to see it that way it took a lot of the stress off.

I also began to tell myself 'Oh well, put on another layer of skin', whenever something didn't work out or whenever I was dealing with difficult clients.

Jo

Jenny, I can understand it being in the top 10...but I'm able to deal with it.  I guess I look at it like Jo, a bit of a game while trying to balance the seriousness of it all.  What I do have little patience for are some of the agents that seem to make everything difficult.

Hi Jo - after 21 years I'm getting pretty hot from all these layers lol.  Not getting attached to the outcome is very sound advice.

LOL Karen - oops, I think you are serious. :)

Hey Nick: Funny I like to play a game when I'm dealing with difficult agents.  Kill them with kindness lol.  Or let them rant and remain silent.  When they stop  they say hello? are you there?  Then they realize how silly they sounded.

I've always remembered something an agent told me when I first started and it was during an offer negotiation when I had the listing and he had the buyer.  He said he who speaks first, loses.  I know that isn't new but I find it to be true.  Silence can be golden while negotiating.
