The Worst Popular Song Ever Used In An Advertisement? Now I Know, Elvis....

By

Elvis in VegasSomeone will eventually write a book about the obnoxious use of great music (and vice-versa) in cheesy advertising spots-- who knows, maybe me if you all respond with your great suggestions to round out a good list.  Good songs used well and great songs used awfully, that's what we need to know!

I understand imagery and the use of emotion in advertising.  I get the part where advertisers rope you in by making great associations with things you want to be associated with (I've seen those Coors Light ads with the little chicas that were NEVER around when I was in college!).  I know that sex sells!  But c'mon, really, Elvis and Viagra?  And on the anniversary of his death, no less?  Puhleeze!  So I say this as a warning to all of us that need to market ourselves-- be careful about what you use to associate yourself and an image!  It could come back to haunt you!

Viagra PillsI heard it [not on the grapevine] this morning on the drive in to the office.  An Elvis rip-off singer doing "Viva Viagra" loud enough to get The King himself to break his self-imposed hiatus from live shows and come out publicly against exploitation of the classics!  Try not to have THAT song in your head all day!

Enough already with the 600 times a game John Mellencamp songs for Chevy.  No mas with "Mr. Roboto" and the VW.  If I hadn't seen Led Zeppelin in '73 with my own eyes I could maybe understand them doing a Cadillac commercial-- but I was there, man, and they played for 4 hours!  How could Jimmy Paige do this to me?  It's so bad that I've erased "Start Me Up" from the list of actual Stones "songs" and now just think of it as a cheesy commercial jingle.  Help me out here:  Devo's "Whip It" as the theme to a Swiffer ad?  Save me!  "Lust For Life" on a cruise ship line ad?  Clearly somebody didn't read the liner notes!  Creedence's "Fortunate Son" on Wrangler jeans?  If that doesn't make a songwriter negotiate the copyrights to their music better-- nothing will (unless it's hearing The Who on a Nissan commercial-- Pete, I renounce you for free-- and that's the REAL Bargain!).

Some songs work in ads without destroying the song itself or the artist.  If Microsoft torched The Stones with Windows 95's launch, using Madonna's "Ray of Light" for XP was genius.  It works and I don't actually run from the noise if the song is played on retro radio.

But let's face it:  What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas.  Or at least it should have, Elvis (you remember what wise men say, don'tcha?)....  Cue the Viagra ad and then cue the music to "Start Me Up"!

I know Robbie Kreiger and Ray Manzeric want to change it, but the Doors had signed an agreement back in the 60's that their music would never be used in commercials and the former drummer, Jim Morrison's girlfriend (who was part of the signed agreement) and Morrison's estate are keeping it from happening.

Can you imagine "Light My Fire" or "LA Woman" in a commercial?

I saw them a couple of year ago in West Palm (Kreiger, Manzeric, Ian Astbury in the Jim Morrison lead, plus a drummer and bass) and they blew away the crowd. It was dynamite. I was four rows from the speakers, couldn't hear for 3 days, but loved every minute.

Not bad for a 62 year old rocker.

I'm having a vision right now, Fred, of a liquor commercial with "Crystal Ship" playing as the whisky splashes [in slo-mo] into the glass-- and it makes me want to throw up!  Thanks!

My vote for best song (and, coincidentally for worst song) goes to the Steve Miller Band's "Fly Like An Eagle" on the post office commercials.  Are eagles fast, or do they just prey on the critters down below?

haha, great blog Chris.

Viagra seems to be on a lets disguise our ad as something cool and them out of the blue you’re hit with an ad about Viagra.  I was watching TV when an ad came on with 4 or 5 guys in a band sitting around singing, the song was catchy but then the lyrics changed to talking about the benefits of Viagra.  Needles to say I was not impressed and disappointed in the outcome of the commercial.  But I watched it, isn't that all that advertisers care about.

Thank goodness for the ability to fastforward through commercials with a DVR box, I haven't had to suffer lately since I got it.

Maybe not a great song, but Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In being used in Kia Rondo commercials drives me crazy!

I'd read that book... go forth and write it Chris!

The only people happy to hear the 5th Dimension doing a Kia commercial are... let's face it, the 5th Dimension!

As a very big Elvis fan, I am really glad I haven't heard that one yet or like Elvis I may have taken a shot at the TV with my pistol. (TCB)

OMG - Too funny - I saw the Viva Viagra ad over the weekend and died laughing. My boyfriend did not find it as funny but I think Elvis would be doing a Viagra ad if he was still alive and kicking. It should have been Bob Dole at a karaoke bar singing Viva Viagra!!

Todd:  Do I have to put down my peanut butter and fried banana sandwich before aiming?

Rebecca:  Bob Dole, at a Halloween Party, in full Elvis 'regalia'?  There's an image to not bring up to the conscious level of the mind....

Hi Chris...It seems that ever since somebody changed the words to 'Jingle bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg...' the whole popular music scene has been continually spinning out of control.  Great post.

And since you referenced your Grandmother in your last comment to me I'll return the favor and quote mine, may she rest in peace...

"God did not put us on this Earth to be happy."

Hmmm

Geno:  I'm betting that our grandmothers have finished morning Mass and are together talking about us on some celestial cloud even as I write this.  You'll appreciate this: she lived long enough to see my bride and I marry but her hug with me after the ceremony (performed by a female Methodist minister) didn't say 'congratulations' or 'I'm happy for you' but rather 'is it legal?'  Go Grandma!

What about "We Want the Funk" for a minivan!  The Honda Odyssey

The worst is the USPS' Fly Like an Eagle - I'm of the same opinion Mr. Dollar!

Then there are the obscure songs that become popular due to commercials - like the ones they use with iPod and iPhones and some other cars.

It's just their fun way of re-wiring your brain to think about their product when you are trying to tap your memories of a different time.

And here I am, in Las Vegas for NAR, camped out in a hotel room and thinking "Elvis would just cry" if he could see what they've done to this place.  What a zoo!

No doubt that some out there take the approach that a glam shot translates into wishful thinking on the part of prospective clients that perhaps there will be more to the "relationship" than just buying or selling a house.

Just stumbled across your post and thought maybe it would be filled with SPAM since it said Viagra.  Guess you've moved on from AR.
