Lightning strike near Baboquivari Peak: Mike in Tucson

Himdag Ki: Mike in TucsonSaturday afternoon, and I found myself in the desert 60 miles west of Tucson.  The monsoon rains have come late this year, but they're here now!

At the entrance to Baboquivari Park (near Topawa, AZ, on the Tohono O'odham Nation,) is a magnificent structure, the Nation's Himdag Ki building.

"Himdag Ki" means "Way of Life." It's both a museum and a cultural center.  The museum and its library are open to the public, and I spent nearly an hour in the library.  But that's another story...

Petroglyphs

Twelve miles into the park (the lightning photo above) I saw a small sign pointing off the the south that read "Picture Rock."

Petroglyphs at Baboquivari Park: Mike in Tucson

Don't the rock carvings off to the right look like jellyfish?!  I have a book on petroglyphs, and I'll have to look that up and find out what it really means.  The closest jellyfish to this area are less than 100 miles southwest, on the coast of the Baja Peninsula.  I wonder...

Great capture of the lightning. We had a lightning/thunder storm here in San Diego this week. Very unusual for our area. This looks like a great museum to visit! We will have to remember this for our next trip to AZ!

Mike...

I have been trying to catch an awesome lightning shot for years. Incredible. Also, there are some petroglyphs in the North Carolina Mountains that are quite mysterious as to their origin.

GEEZ!  I was astounded when I saw the lightening.  Then the Petroglyphs.

I find these carvings fascinating and I don't even know why.  Actually, I find all things prehistoric and don't even know why.  It's like I want to get inside of their head and see what they saw.

MIke stay safe down there!  I know how close lightening can get in our storms - way to close for comfort as we live between 2 mountains and it's like a light show from heaven. I love the monsoon season!  You guys are lucky to be getting some rain. We haven't had a drop yet and focrast says maybe not until towards the end of next week.

Great photo's!

Unless their seconds apart how the heck do you get such a dynamic shot?

I don't have anything in my neck of the woods (city) like the rock. Wonderful place you live.

Nice lightening shot!  Did you just happen to shoot at the right time or did you wait with the shutter open?

I see an anchor...

You are getting the rains before we are up here -- humidity is higher and thunder and lightening but no rain except a few drops.

Carolin,

We'll send it your way.  :)

Doreen, Ken & Jane,

I stood in the same spot and took 72 photos in 3-photo bursts with my little digital camera.  Number 72 was the winner, and I ran down to the car before the storm engulfed me.  It just takes patience and a little luck.

Mike, I can totally understand how painstaking it is to take photos of lightning strikes. Talk about a shot in the dark. Being persistent does pay off...
