THE REALTOR vs THE RACCOON

As an up in coming star in the world of New Jersey Real Estate (shameless self plug) I find myself in some wacky adventures as I navigate through helping buyers and sellers but none more wacky than the following....

So I was visiting one of my listing because my sellers were out-of-town and I wanted to make sure the place was in order while they were gone; so I stopped by the house and everything looked close to normal so I was in and out and off to the road.  But for some reason I decided today was a great day to see the REO Listing that is located 4 doors down and priced about 50k less than my listing, so I walk towards the property and start walking up what seemed like a 100 steps (it is a raised ranch by the way) I reach the top, search for the lockbox and input the code.  Of course it was in the worst possible spot,

But anyways I entered the house to find a horrible messthere was garbage everywhere and it smelled really bad, so I understood immediately why it was priced they way it was, so I continued my tour and got to the kitchen area where I saw a door

figuring it was the door to the basement or a pantry I approached the door (slowly) because something was pretty spooky about the whole scene, so I opened the door and said to myself oh look a cat, then I quickly realized...it wasn't cat...and there he was...

                                                                    A RACCOON

and boy did he look angry that I interrupted his sleep, so of course I jumped back and starting backing up...again (slowly) Out of no where the raccoon jumped up in a defensive stance and started moving in my direction, now from what I understand some of those raccoons have rabies and those claws are not your average back scratcher so I made a move for the door...I turned around and there he was, I grabbed a broomstick and had to swing it at the raccoon to scare him off...I backed up (slowly) got to the front door, closed it behind me, throw that key in the lockbox and high tailed out of there.  I quickly called the office and let them know what I have discovered and advise them to call animal control.

Talk about a close call...I was not prepared for what I had encountered so I warn anyone going into a vacant house; be careful...I find the story quite amusing now, but at the time it was no laughing matter...

After making it out safe I am extremely grateful that this turned out for the best and upon telling the story to a few friends all I heard was hahahahhahahahahaha

Even I had to laugh after it was over...so I guess Round 1 goes to the Raccoon.

Half the time the problem is, you don't know it's a vacant house until you get there.  They don't always advertise that fact even in the MLS.  Good thing you didn't get bitten.

I've encountered the droppings from animals in vacant houses, but never the animal itself.  You were lucky not to get bitten!

Pam I couldn't agree with you more, a bite from a Raccoon can be deadly...
