Oviedo vs. Hagerty

In Oviedo, Florida there are two high schools. There is Oviedo High School in the heart of downtown Oviedo and then there is Hagerty High School near UCF and in the middle of the neighborhood of Carillon. It might be hard to tell the difference between these schools at first glance, but they are almost polar opposites.

The first and most important difference is that I went to school at Hagerty High School and graduated this past June. My older sister went to Oviedo High School. So obviously Hagerty High School is better than Oviedo High School.

The Oviedo Lions have been around for over 40 years. Built in 1969, Oviedo High School is one of the oldest schools in Central Florida. Hagerty on the other hand is a mere five years old. This former middle school was only opened in 2005.

In 2005 the Hagerty Huskies were just one freshman class of puppies. With each new school year brought another class with it. I was in the second class of the school. During my freshman year, I didn't worry about being trash canned or getting my lunch money stolen by the upperclassmen. Now you may be thinking, ‘Well as nice as that is, what about the freshmen now?" Well IF there is an upperclassman who wants to bully a freshman and try to steal their lunch money, they will find it nearly impossible. Hagerty High School is equipped with a biometric fingerprint scanning system in the cafeteria. Without a student account and matching fingerprint, you won't be eating lunch (unless you bring your lunch to school).

One of the biggest differences between schools are the athletic programs. Since Oviedo High School has been around decades longer than Hagerty, obviously they have a more developed sports program. However, after only five years of existence, Hagerty has won several district and conference titles. Every year both of these schools compete in "Oviedo's Annual Football Challenge Cup". The first year, Hagerty brought home the trophy with a score of 35-28. However, the following year Oviedo emerged victorious with a 55-22 win over the Huskies, bringing the record to a 1-1 draw. This year will be the third year of the challenge and the tie-breaker. Unless, that is, Oviedo and Hagerty tie..

One of the most successful student organizations is the Husky band. This group of marching musicians has consistently scored well in every competition they compete in.

Both of these schools have a variety of student organizations and extracurricular activities. There is a Student Government, SECME, Spanish Honor Society, and the Gay-Straight Alliance in each school. There are also several clubs in each school that are not in the other. The Oviedo Lions have the International Cuisine Club, Skills USA, and the Chefs Club. The Huskies have Four Square Club, Teenage Republicans, Young Democrats, FOCUS Photography (which I founded), Step Team, Programming Club, Book Club, Anime Cub, Robotics Club, and much more.

Theater is another extracurricular that both schools share a passion for. Hagerty has put on several plays and musicals including Snoopy, The Miracle Worker, Cheaper by the Dozen, Bye Bye Birdie, You Can't Take That With You, Footloose, Rumors, Beauty & The Beast, Is He Dead?,  and Seussical. At Oviedo High School has performed Rumors, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Class Action, Anything Goes, The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood, Once Upon a Mattress, Othello, and The Wizard of Oz.  Even though Oviedo High School has been performing plays and musicals for over 30 years more than Hagerty, the Huskies have been just as successful. Hagerty has won awards such as straight superiors for several plays and best in show for both monologues and plays.

Both of these schools are excellent schools receiving "A" ratings. Oviedo has the experience, but Hagerty has the potential. The Huskies are growing quickly and will soon be the alpha school of the town.
