It’s a Dog’s Life: Country Companions Mobile Veterinary Practice in Northern Larimer County

By
Real Estate Agent with United Country Ponderosa Realty, Red Feather Lakes, Colorado

We are very fortunate to have Debbie Sunken D.V.M. of Country Companions in our Northern Larimer County, Colorado area.

Although many veterinarians across the country travel to assist large animals, I was happy when I found Dr. Sunken because she also visits small animals in their homes.

For things such as vaccinations, and check- ups, she makes house calls and she's well equipped with a huge mobile surgery unit that comes to your home when surgery is needed also.

Our dog, Charley, was due for her rabies vaccine today.

Thanks to Dr. Sunken, there was no need to put the hairy dog in the car (although she would have loved it) and drive to town.

Our previous dog, Cody, was terrified when I used to take her to the vet.   I was a little afraid, too because Cody didn't like other dogs at all.

The thought of some poor unsuspecting customer walking into the vet's reception area with their darling little poodle and Cody playing out her role in the "The Wild Kingdom" was terrifying.

Well, thankfully  she never attacked a poor little unsuspecting poodle but as the Alpha Dog, she taught Charley not to like or trust other dogs either.

Now, Charley is 13 years old.  She's a fierce watch dog but once introduced she's very sweet and likes our family and friends.

She was happy to see Dr. Sunken today.

It's unusual that someone would come to the house just to visit her!

Charley got a check-up and her vaccine right in the living room and she didn't even notice the shot.

Done!

No hairy car or slobber-fied car windows, no terrified pet or stressed-out owner, either!

It's a blessing to have Dr. Sunken's Country Companions Mobile Veterinary Practice in our area.  Not only does she take excellent care of our pets, but she makes house calls! Contact Dr. Sunken:970-881-2526.

Mary, this is a wonderful service and just what I would expect in the RFL area!  Charley is just adorable!  Is she a Golden Retriever or a lab?  She looks right at home in the water!

Did you sell your vet's house, Mary?  I thought I remember reading in one of your postlets for a listing about a "Sunken living room".    ^_~

Have a great weekend in your Mountain Paradise, Mary!

Thanks Michael, of course we think she's cute, too!  It's really nice to have a great vet in the area.  I appreciate your thoughts tonight Michael!

Tammy, Your Dr. Meeks sounds like a wonderful vet and friend to you.  I got goosebumps reading your story. We are so attached to our pets- it's natural to get attached to our vets too!  Thanks for that Tammy!

Hi Carol, Oh no seizures?!  Poor dog.  I'm glad the he could just stay in the back of his truck where he felt more secure and had a vet that would come to him.  That's a great story.  Thank you for sharing that.

Hi Craig, What a concept!  You're right, we are lucky.  I'm glad you stopped by tonight thanks Craig- have a great weekend.

Hi Kate, Charley says thank you :-)   You know first hand how wonderful it is to have a vet come to the animals and not have to "call in the National Guard"! LOL!  That's funny, thanks Kate.

Hi Suzanne,  I know what you mean about our furry friends fur --- it's like sand, you can never get it all ! I can't believe they made you stand in line for 2 hours either - you have determination!  As I was counting my blessings today, I decided I just had to give Debbie a big shout out!  I'm glad you stopped by, thanks Suzanne!

Hi William, You're right Charley was smiling!- actually all of us were:-)  Thanks for your take on it William!

Hi Bruce, "sunken living room" HAHAHA!  We don't know what breed(s) Charley is.  She resembles a Golden Retreiver a little - but she doesn't retreive, she has freckles on her white socks, like a spaniel and she doesn't bark - she yodels like a hound ... Thanks Bruce, you're right it is a wonderful service for our area and I hope you have a great weekend too!

Say Mary, since Charley received her vaccine I don't suppose there is any chance she will become a rabid blogger assisting you  in the future, will she?

Hi Jane, maybe I will look into finding a mobile groomer.  Charley thinks getting brushed is close to torture .... Thanks Jane, I won't tell her it was you that brought that up.

She's been bugging me Bruce.  She wants to be a blogger and become more social in her old age!

It's very convenient Lou, you're right!  Thanks for coming by tonight I hope you have a great weekend Lou!

Mary, I don't want to miss the point of your post and I'm glad it all ended happy for you and Charley.

One of the things I (you) need to write about is people moving into our areas and how to keep our pets safe. I had a call two days ago from a woman who is moving from an East Coast city to 40 acres in Colorado. One of her questions was how to  keep her pets safe. She had read that we have bear, wild cats and other animals that could hurt her pets. Lets face it, to a hawk or an owl a house cat looks like dinner and can become just that as fast as we turn out heads. And yep, rabies, snake bites, even bug bitss effect our pets too.

Maybe this is a sad, yet needed post to add to our blogs?

Hi Dorie, It really is nice to Have Dr. Sunken here, I know Charley likes it :-)  She is a good pet Dorie, thank you!

Hi Dena, Thanks for putting that idea out there, although listening to the news it seems like the lions and bears are also going into the cities too!  It's important to know the steps to take to keep our pets safe!

In a pet's life, there is nothing more important than a good vet, unless it is us.

When my kids were younger, we had a pet poodle. Gigi was accidentally shot, when a neighbor kid fired a pellet gun at the pavement, and it richocheted and hit her in the abdomen.  I will never forget the trauma.  We had just moved into our home, were living paycheck to paycheck, and worried about the vet bill.  Gigi was hospitalized for several days, and I continued to ask the vet what the bill would be.  I needed a ballpark figure so I could try to scrape it together.   I was aprehensive, because the doc wouldn't give me a clue as to what the cost was going to be.

Finally, on about the 5th day, the call came from the vet's nurse, who said it was time for Gigi to come home.  I asked, about the bill, so I would know how much to draw out of savings?  Imagine my surprise when she said the doc said to charge boarding fees only.   You could have picked me up off the floor.  However, we gave it back over the years, when we were a tad more affluent, and our numerous pets seemed to find their way back to the hospital:-)

I'm seeing more and more mobile vets around here, too. It's about time! I never did like taking my pets to the vet, and they were never happy to go, either!

Hi Mary, Wow, what a great vet - that travels to your door. There seems to be more of a calling for that type of thing. There are so many pups and kitties that are terrified of going to the vets office (and of riding in the car).  Dr, Sunken sounds like a wonderful person.

Hello Melissa!  I think it's important to sing praises for great services.  Dr. Sunken has Charley howling praises, too :-) I'm glad you came by, thanks Melissa!

Hi Myrl, your story is such a good one, I can only imagine the real costs involved! and to be shot??!!! good grief!  I think you're right, our pet's veterinarians are so important!  Thank you Myrl, what a great Gigi story.

Lisa, It sure does!  I know Dr. Sunken also helps the "low-landers" too :-) It's nice to see you, thanks Lisa!

Hi Sheldon!  You are absolutely right!  I often wished our pediatrician made house calls, I was certain that they were going to get sicker in that waiting room full of feverish, runny nosed, coughing kids! LOL!  Thank you Sheldon, hope your 2 legged little ones are having a blast today!

Russel,  I'm so glad to hear that!  It's so much easier on the pets and their owners I think.  I appreciate you stopping in Russel - thank you and I'm sure Zoey the Cool Cat appreciates your mobile vet, too!

Hi Sandy, I agree.  So many pets don't like going to the vet's office.  It's probably easier on the Vet, too!  Charley reminded me to tell Bailey "Hi"  Thanks Sandy, have a nice day.

Dena's#16 comment is well advised.  I too, see the very special nature of your post, and living in a small community where this sort of thing is commonplace, is fun and quaint for city folks that come to the mountains. What isn't fun is losing pets to wildlife.  We never lost one, but our cats came in at night.  A couple of times our old tomcat came home, late, (after dark). He had dark muddy slobbery "stuff" all around his neck, but whatever had him, didn't get him...we were really lucky! Charley is just the kind of dog to have on acreage, a GREAT watchdog, who can "turn it off" when she knows its time!

Hi Cherise, thank you.  We do need more mobile vets, it's a great service!  I remember your Golden, did you get another dog?

Hi Jennifer, it is so much better than taking an unsocialized animal into a social situation!

Hi Cheryl, You are so right and Dena brought up a very good point.  I was talking to my neighbor the other day about the kitten I found and he took home last October....now MIA, one night he just didn't come home.  That was very sad to hear. Charley is a great alarm system but thankfully not brave enough to after the wildlife!
