Odds & Ends ... Catching up on some thoughts from Ocean City, New Jersey
I enjoyed the first of the twelve parts to "Boardwalk Empire" on HBO last evening. It's hard to believe how different Ocean City (NJ) in Cape May County is so different from Atlantic City (NJ) in Atlantic County ... only about a 30-minute drive from one another.
Summer closes out this week with the morning air getting a bit cooler each day, but it was still beach weather over the weekend ... even though we spent a night in "Long Beach Island" for a wedding.
I saw in the newspaper this morning that Gogi Grant is 86 years old today. And who is Gogi Grant you ask? A hint ... a singer. I give away my age here in that she probably had her hit tune played on "Your Hit Parade" on one of the three channels that we could get on the television. The song was "The Wayword Wind" ... "On a lonely track by railroad shack, she met his wondering ways ... and the Wayword Wind was a restless wind, a restless wind that yearns to wonder ..." I may have missed some words and even the spelling of the song, but you get the message.
I guess I'm focusing on age right now having gone to my 50th Class Reunion in Lancaster County on Friday evening. Someone asked me how it went, and I responded: "It was like an out-of-body experience while I was there." You knew these people for a four or more year intense experience at a very young age. Since that time you only see most of them one or two days every five or ten years. Everyone has changed; some have died, and many do not come. So when we went to our other obligation the next evening age was on my mind again ... young people getting married, old people also at the wedding, etc. Looking again at the birthday list that contained the name of Gogi Grant ... I know a lot more of the older people mentioned and very few of the younger ones. By the way, Sophia Loren is 76 years old today ... that was the only other one I knew.
So we are back on our island for a time ... another busy week with a Buyer coming to town for a few days on Wednesday evening. I'll spend a good part of Thursday with them. I will probably have several open houses this weekend too.
Maybe I will get to the beach for a few hours some afternoon this week ... it is my favorite time of the year to be on this lovely barrier island they call Ocean City, New Jersey. dap
