I Staged An Office And Made It A Home

A few years ago, when my office on Long Island moved from a small space to a much larger, brand new building, I had the opportunity to have my own office.  I'd longed for one for years, a space where I could close a door and get my work done and manage to have a cohesive, uninterrupted thought.  It was to be a relatively small room (7'x10') real estate officethat held two desks, with room for little else, but I was determined to make it my own.  Laura Cerrano's post last night asking How Happy Are You In Your Office brought a smile to my face as I remembered those days.

There was a large open area, typical for real estate offices, in the center of the room, surrounded by seven private offices.  I chose the one that was dead center, on the right.  On either side of me were identical spaces, with desks facing the back.  There was no way that setup would work for me.  It felt isolating, a little like a backward facing seat on a train.

Once the colors were chosen by the owners (nothing I would have picked) and furniture installed, I was given carte blanche to finish the project.  I've rarely had more fun staging any space and wound up with a room that everyone gravitated to.  When they recruited, agents were brought over to me to give them an idea of what their options were if the joined us.

The office setup didn't last long, the economy forcing a downsizing and finding me working for the first time in my career from a home office.  It was fun while it lasted.

This brought back some memories for me too Geri.  The first two companies I was with would not let me have a private office even if I was willing to pay for it!  The second company regretted not giving me one because my business jumped so much in one year that I was in the top 1% out of 6,000 agents as they were losing me.  So the third company lured me with one of the largest offices they had.  I probably spent an entire week shopping to furnish it.  When I was finished, it looked nicer than my home!!  It was one of the stops on the office tour for agents they were hoping to recruit.

Yes, economy and downsizing caused that office to close, so I am now working out of a home office with my two assistants sitting in a very small office with decorating remnants from days long ago!!(Should have taken pictures, but never did!)

That looks great!  I had an office about that size before and it was as boring as could be.  That may not have been the colors you would have picked, but at least you got color.

Linda - That was an office I had before the company downsized.  I loved staging it.  It was a warm, welcoming place and drew people in all the time.

Pat - We've been on parallel paths a number of times in the past.  I too have yet to do my home office.  I've designed it in my mind but that's as far as I've gotten.

Roger - I loved them both.  They made me smile every day and engendered much conversation.

Debra - Considering what I had to work with it was a pretty space.  It was also serene.

Peter & Linda - I'm sure you're enjoying your space.

Stephanie - You'r'e absolutely right.  It would have been easier to create a warm space if the colors weren't cold, but it worked out well in the end and it wasn't boring.

Hi Geri,

Your office looks (or looked) beautiful, very personalized.

It's been interesting reading your post and your comments, the downsizing issue has happened to so many. I moved my company a few months ago and it took longer than anticipated to get up a running. I'm still looking for a few peices now, and I liked your idea of "staging" an office. Maybe I'll post a few photos when I'm done.

Lynda, please do post photos when you're finished.  Moving an office is a daunting task.  Unless you're Roger Mucci who can move, unpack and organize all in one day, it takes time.  The good thing about it is giving yourself a fresh start in a new environment.  I hope the change of location brings with it much success.

Hey Gerri, thanks for the link love :) You did an awesome job setting up the office with such little space.  The NYC company I mentioned in my last blog had a similar situation, only two desks could fit in one office. lucky for them, they did have a huge window.  My client wanted very simple, including with color.  she wanted to add color using pictures, painting  and plants, rather than the rely on the color of the wall.  :) Wonderful staging you have done!!

Gerri,

Beautiful office... I love how you staged a small space but it doesn't look that way.  I'm glad you took pictures so you can look back at them and share them with others.  Great job!
