Could This Be Catching On?

By
Home Inspector with JRV Home Inspection Services, LLC HOI 394

A few months back I wrote about a new feature for the home I found during an inspection. This is unquestionably out of the box thinking. Way, way out of the box. I could see some merit in the idea, but felt it was ahead or perhaps behind it's time. Well can you believe it; someone picked up the ball and ran with it.

watch your step!You can imagine my surprise when I rounded the corner of this home and found;

The Mother-In-Law Exit

It's not often you find similar innovative thinking and design on two separate homes. There may be some kind of physic connection between the owners or maybe they just share the same wacky architectural concepts. I can only speculate because I have not had the honor of meeting either design star.

Now there's an idea. I should contact HGTV show they can showcase this fantastic design element on one of their shows. Better yet maybe they could start a new series. What would be a good name for this show?  Twisted Concepts? What Were They Thinking?

What would you call the show?

James, the best thing I see about that setup is no way back in! Why, they have her all set up back there... restroom bucket, window, water storage, pole to hang clothes on, what's not to like?

James:

From the picture you can see the mother in law could easily have made the oil tank if she had put forth the effort. I vote not guilty an the attempted manslaughter charge!

All the best,

Herb

My logic; if your mother-in-law walked out that door she would seriously injure her leg, and wouldn't be able to leave. I think it would need to be at least 20 ft. off the ground (second story) to be a true mother-in-law exit :)

James, perhaps it should be called the "mother-in-law entrance"... that would save some time ;-)

Funny, is that the downstairs suite below? I see a whole in the foundation under the door. Redneck Living? Do you even have rednecks in Connecticut?

James, I'm not sure what this picture actually shows.  It looks like a doghouse, or a bunker entrance of sorts.  Can you stand in this or is it a crawl entrance to the house?  Your article doesn't really explicitly say what this Mother-in-law exit actually does except to suggest that it may be a back door of sorts.  Would love to know more.  It's quirky and weird.  Good luck on all yous inspections, I'm sure you see a lot of weird things out there, and they're plenty material for good novels.  Cheers for now.

Jim, Good one!

Fred, That's the idea. Once they're out, they're out for good.

Michele, Not mine, she's wonderful.

Herb, Yea, that's the ticket. ;)

Jon, That was covered in the first blog :)

Jay, I like it! Funny how the same people show up all over the country ;)

Chris, Another good one. If she can't get in, no need to show her out.

Valerie, That is the crawl space entry. And yes we have something similar to rednecks. :)

Jay, Yep, ol' Uncle B. who could forget about him.

Dan, Investment property, Doubt they will have much input.

Charlie, Good choices, but I like #2 the best.

Nutsy, I saw signs of enrty and exit of your kind around the house.

Jark, The deck is missing.

Reuben, Do I get a royalties? ;)
